Translation
✧ The arrival of the delegation of al-Azd to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Ṣurad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Azdī came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and embraced Islam, and his Islam was good, in a delegation from al-Azd. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed him over those of his people who had embraced Islam, and commanded him to fight with those who had embraced Islam against the polytheists among the tribes of Yemen who were adjacent to him. Ṣurad went out proceeding according to the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he encamped at Jurash, which was then a closed city, containing tribes from the tribes of Yemen. Khathʿam had sought refuge with them and entered it with them when they heard of the Muslims' march toward them. They besieged them in it for nearly a month, and they held out in it, so he turned back from them, returning, until when he was at a mountain of theirs called Shakar, the people of Jurash thought that he had only turned away from them in defeat. They went out in pursuit of him, and when they caught up with him, he turned upon them and fought them, killing them with a severe slaughter. [The Messenger's informing the two delegates of Jurash of what had happened to their people] The people of Jurash had sent two men from among them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah to scout and observe. While they were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one evening after the ʿaṣr prayer, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "In which of Allah's lands is Shakar?" The two Jurashī men stood up to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, in our land there is a mountain called Kashr, and thus the people of Jurash call it." He said, "It is not Kashr, but rather Shakar." They said, "What is its affair, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Allah's sacrificial camels are being slaughtered near it now." He said: The two men sat with Abū Bakr or with ʿUthmān, and he said to them, "Woe to you two! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is announcing to you the death of your people. Arise to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him to supplicate Allah to lift [the affliction] from your people." So they arose to him and asked him for that. He said, "O Allah, lift it from them." They departed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returning to their people, and found that their people had been struck on the day Ṣurad b. ʿAbd Allāh struck them, on the day in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said what he said, and at the hour in which he mentioned what he mentioned. [The Islam of the people of Jurash] The delegation of Jurash went out until they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and embraced Islam. He designated for them a protected grazing area around their town, with known boundary markers, for horses, riding camels, and for the plowing oxen. Whoever grazes in it from among the people, for them is unlawful gain. A man from al-Azd said concerning that expedition: Khathʿam used to raid al-Azd in the Age of Ignorance, and they used to transgress in the sacred month: O expedition that we did not undertake except as one not disappointed, in it are mules, and in it are horses and donkeys, until we came to Ḥumayr in its fortresses and the gathering of Khathʿam, to whom warnings had spread. When I set down a burning thirst I had been carrying, then I care not whether they draw near after that or disbelieve.
