Mention of Year Nine and Its Designation as the Year of Delegations
Translation
✧ On the delegations of Fazārah to him ﷺ Ibn Saʿd and al-Bayhaqī narrated from Abū Wajzah Yazīd b. ʿUbayd al-Saʿdī ؓ, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned from Tabūk, and that was the year nine, a delegation of Banū Fazārah came to him, some ten-odd men, among them Khārijah b. Ḥiṣn, and al-Ḥurr b. Qays b. Ḥiṣn, who was the youngest of them—and they were in a lean year—on emaciated riding camels. They came professing Islam. They alighted at the house of Ramlah bt. al-Ḥadath. The Messenger of God ﷺ asked them about their lands. One of them said: O Messenger of God, our lands have become barren, our livestock have perished, our environs have dried up, and our dependents have become famished. So call upon your Lord to succor us, and intercede for us with your Lord, and let your Lord intercede for us with you. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Glory be to God! Woe to you! It is I who intercede with my Lord, mighty and glorious; who then is there to intercede for our Lord with Him? There is no god but He, the Most High, the Mighty. His footstool encompasses the heavens and the earth, and they creak from His might and glory as a new saddle creaks." The Messenger of God ﷺ also said: "God, mighty and glorious, laughs at your urgency, your need, and the nearness of your relief." The Bedouin said: O Messenger of God, does our Lord, mighty and glorious, laugh? He said: "Yes." The Bedouin said: We shall never miss good from a Lord who laughs. The Messenger of God ﷺ laughed at his words, and he ascended the pulpit and spoke a few words. He would not raise his hands in any supplication except in prayer for rain. He raised his hands so that the whiteness of his armpits was seen. Among what was preserved of his supplication: "O God, give drink to Your land and Your beasts, spread Your mercy, and revive Your dead country. O God, give us a succoring rain, wholesome and pleasant, abundant and broad, swift not delayed, beneficial not harmful. O God, give us rain as a mercy, and do not give us rain as a punishment, nor destruction, nor drowning, nor ruin. O God, give us rain and grant us victory over the enemies." Abū Lubābah b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir al-Anṣārī ؓ stood up and said: O Messenger of God, the dates are in the drying-yard—in another wording, the drying-yards. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "O God, give us rain." Abū Lubābah repeated his words, and the Messenger of God ﷺ repeated his supplication. Abū Lubābah came back again and said: The dates are in the drying-yard, O Messenger of God. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "O God, give us rain until Abū Lubābah stands naked blocking the watercourse of his drying-yard with his lower garment." They said: By God, we could see no cloud in the sky, nor any small cloud, and between us and Salʿ there was neither house nor abode. Then from behind Salʿ there arose a cloud like a shield, and when it reached the middle of the sky it spread, then it rained. He said: By God, we did not see the sun for a week. Abū Lubābah stood naked blocking the watercourse of his drying-yard with his lower garment so that the dates would not flow out of it. That man, or another, came and said: O Messenger of God, the wealth has perished and the paths have been cut off. The Messenger of God ﷺ ascended the pulpit and supplicated, raising his hands until the whiteness of his armpits was seen. Then he said: "O God, around us and not upon us; O God, upon the hills and the small mountains, the bottoms of the valleys, and the places where trees grow." Then the cloud departed from Madinah as a garment is removed.
