Translation

✧ A delegation of Tujīb—they being from al-Sakūn—to him ﷺ The delegation of Tujīb came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, thirteen men in number, and they brought with them the alms of their wealth which God, Mighty and Majestic, had imposed. The Messenger of God ﷺ rejoiced at them and honored their lodging. They said: O Messenger of God, we have brought to you God's right in our wealth. He ﷺ said: "Return it and distribute it among your poor." They said: O Messenger of God, we came to you only with what was surplus from our poor. Abū Bakr said: O Messenger of God, no delegation of the Arabs has come to us with the like of what this tribe of Tujīb has brought. He ﷺ said: "Guidance is in the hand of God, Mighty and Majestic. Whomever God wills good for, He opens his breast to faith." They asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about matters, and he wrote for them concerning them. They kept asking him about the Qurʾān and the sunan, and the Messenger of God ﷺ grew more desirous of them and commanded Bilāl to treat them hospitably. They stayed some days but did not prolong their stay. It was said to them: What makes you hasten? They said: We return to those behind us to inform them of our seeing the Messenger of God ﷺ and our speaking with him, and what he replied to us. Then they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to bid him farewell. He commanded Bilāl, and he gave them gifts more generous than what he gave delegations. He said: "Is there anyone left of you?" They said: A boy we left behind with our baggage, and he is the youngest of us in age. He said: "Send him to us." When they returned to their baggage, they said to the boy: Go to the Messenger of God and fulfill your need from him, for we have fulfilled our needs from him and bidden him farewell. So the boy came until he reached the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, I am a boy of the Banū Abdhā from the group who came to you just now, and you fulfilled their needs, so fulfill my need, O Messenger of God. He said: "What is your need?" He said: O Messenger of God, my need is not like the need of my companions, though they came desiring Islam and brought what they brought of their alms. By God, nothing brought me from my land except that you ask God, Mighty and Majestic, to forgive me and have mercy on me and to place my richness in my heart. He ﷺ said: "O God, forgive him, have mercy on him, and place his richness in his heart." Then he commanded for him the like of what he commanded for a man of his companions. They departed returning to their families. Then they met the Messenger of God ﷺ at Minā in the year ten and said: We are the Banū Abdhā. The Messenger of God ﷺ asked them about the boy. They said: O Messenger of God, by God, we have never seen the like of him, nor have we been told of anyone more content with what God has provided him. If people divided the world, he would not look toward it nor turn to it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Praise be to God. I hope that he will die whole." A man among them said: Does not a man die whole anyway? He ﷺ said: "His desires and concerns branch out into the valleys of the world, and perhaps his appointed time overtakes him in one of those valleys, and God, Mighty and Majestic, cares not in which of them he perishes." They said: That man lived among us in the best state, the most abstemious in the world, and the most content with what God provided him. When the Messenger of God ﷺ died and some of the people of Yemen turned back from Islam, he stood among his people and reminded them of God and Islam, and not one of them turned back. Abū Bakr ؓ kept mentioning him and asking about him until his state and what he had done reached him. He wrote to Ziyād b. Labīd enjoining him to treat him well.
