Mention of Year Nine and Its Designation as the Year of Delegations
وَفْدِ بَنِي أَسَدٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَوَى ابْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيِّ، وَهُشَامُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ الْكَلْبِيُّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَا: قَدِمَ عَشَرَةُ رَهْطٍ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدِ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي أَوَّلِ سَنَةِ تِسْعٍ، فِيهِمْ حَضْرَمِيُّ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، وَضِرَارُ بْنُ الْأَزْوَرِ، وَوَابِصَةُ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ، وَقَتَادَةُ بْنُ الْقَائِفِ، وَسَلَمَةُ بْنُ حُبَيْشٍ، وَطُلَيْحَةُ بْنُ خُوَيْلِدٍ، وَنُقَادَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خَلَفٍ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ مَعَ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَسَلَّمُوا وَقَالَ مُتَكَلِّمُهُمْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّا شَهْدِنَا أَلَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَنَّكَ عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. وَقَالَ حَضْرَمِيُّ بْنُ عَامِرٍ: «أَتَيْنَاكَ نَتَدَرَّعُ اللَّيْلَ الْبَهِيمَ فِي سَنَةٍ شَهْبَاءَ، وَلَمْ تَبْعَثْ إِلَيْنَا بَعْثًا»، فَنَزَلَتْ فِيهِمْ: يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا [الْحُجُرَاتُ 17]. وَرَوَى النَّسَائِيُّ وَالْبَزَّارُ وَابْنُ مَرْدَوَيْهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ وَعَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، وَابْنُ جَرِيرٍ، وَابْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، وَابْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ، وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ، وَابْنُ مَرْدَوَيْهِ بِسَنَدٍ حَسَنٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَوْفَى، قَالَ الْأَوَّلَانِ: جَاءَتْ بَنُو أَسَدٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمْ نُقَاتِلْكَ كَمَا قَاتَلَكَ الْعَرَبُ، وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ بَنُو فُلَانٍ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا. قَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: وَكَانَ مَعَهُمْ قَوْمٌ مِنْ بَنِي الزِّنْيَةِ وَهُمْ بَنُو مَالِكِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةِ بْنِ دُودَانَ بْنِ أَسَدٍ. فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «أَنْتُمْ بَنُو الرِّشْدَةِ». فَقَالُوا: لَا نَكُونُ مِثْلَ بَنِي مُحَوَّلَةَ، يَعْنُونَ بَنِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ غَطَفَانَ. وَمِمَّا سَأَلُوا عَنْهُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ - يَوْمَئِذٍ الْعِيَافَةَ وَالْكِهَانَةَ وَضَرْبَ الْحَصَى فَنَهَاهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ - عَنْ ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ. فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمُورَ كُنَّا نَفْعَلُهَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، أَرَأَيْتَ خَصْلَةً بَقِيَتْ ؟ قَالَ: «وَمَا هِيَ ؟ » قَالَ [ ﷺ ]: «الْخَطَّ، عَلِمَهُ نَبِيٌّ مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ فَمَنْ صَادَفَ مِثْلَ عِلْمِهِ عَلِمَ». وَرَوَى ابْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ رِجَالٍ مَنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ بَنِي مَالِكِ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَسَدٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ - قَالَ لِنُقَادَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خَلَفِ بْنِ عُمَيْرَةَ بْنِ مُرَيِّ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَسَدِيِّ: «يَا نُقَادَةُ ابْغِ لِي نَاقَةً حَلْبَانَةً رَكْبَانَةً وَلَا تُوَلِّهْهَا عَلَى وَلَدٍ». فَطَلَبَهَا فِي نَعَمِهِ فَلَمْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَيْهَا. فَوَجَدَهَا عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَمٍّ لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهُ سِنَانُ بْنُ ظُفَيْرٍ، فَأَطْلَبَهُ إِيَّاهَا، فَسَاقَهَا نُقَادَةُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ -، فَمَسَحَ ضَرْعَهَا وَدَعَا نُقَادَةَ فَحَلَبَهَا حَتَّى إِذَا أَبْقَى فِيهَا بَقِيَّةً مِنْ لَبَنِهَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ -: أَيْ نُقَادَةُ اتْرُكْ دَوَاعِي اللَّبَنِ». فَشَرِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ - وَسَقَى أَصْحَابَهُ مِنْ لَبَنِ تِلْكَ النَّاقَةِ، وَسَقَى نُقَادَةَ سُؤْرَهُ وَقَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ فِيهَا مِنْ نَاقَةٍ وَفِيمَنْ مَنَحَهَا». قَالَ نُقَادَةُ: قُلْتُ: وَفِيمَنْ جَاءَ بِهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ. قَالَ: وَفِيمَنْ جَاءَ بِهَا».
Translation
✧ The Delegation of Banū Asad to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Ibn Saʿd narrated from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, and Hishām b. Muḥammad b. al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī from his father; they both said: Ten men from Banū Asad b. Khuzaymah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the beginning of the year nine, among them Ḥaḍramī b. ʿĀmir, Ḍirār b. al-Azwar, Wābiṣah b. Maʿbad, Qatādah b. al-Qāʾif, Salamah b. Ḥubaysh, Ṭulayḥah b. Khuwaylid, and Nuqādah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khalaf, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the mosque with his companions. They greeted, and their spokesman said: O Messenger of Allah, we bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that you are His servant and His Messenger. And Ḥaḍramī b. ʿĀmir said: "We have come to you, having traversed the pitch-dark night in a year of drought and hardship, and you did not send any expedition against us." So the verse was revealed concerning them: They consider it a favor to you that they have submitted [al-Ḥujurāt: 17]. Al-Nasāʾī, al-Bazzār, and Ibn Mardawayh narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās; and Saʿīd b. Manṣūr, ʿAbd b. Ḥumayd, Ibn Jarīr, and Ibn al-Mundhir from Saʿīd b. Jubayr; and Ibn al-Mundhir and al-Ṭabarānī and Ibn Mardawayh with a good chain from ʿAbd Allāh b. Awfā. The first two said: Banū Asad came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have submitted and we did not fight you as the Arabs fought you—and in another narration, Banū so-and-so. Then Allah, exalted is He, sent down: They consider it a favor to you that they have submitted. Ibn Saʿd said: With them were a people from Banū al-Zinyah, who are Banū Mālik b. Thaʿlabah b. Dūdān b. Asad. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: "You are Banū al-Rishdah." They said: We will not be like Banū Muḥawwalah, meaning Banū ʿAbd Allāh b. Ghaṭafān. Among the things they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that day were augury, soothsaying, and casting pebbles, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from all of that. They said: O Messenger of Allah, these are things we used to do in the Jāhiliyyah; do you see one trait that remains? He said: "What is it?" He ﷺ said: "Al-khaṭṭ; a prophet among the prophets knew it, so whoever chances upon the like of his knowledge knows." Ibn Saʿd narrated from men of Banū Asad, then from Banū Mālik b. Mālik b. Asad, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Nuqādah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khalaf b. ʿUmayrah b. Murayy b. Saʿd b. Mālik al-Asadī: "O Nuqādah, seek for me a milch camel, fit for riding, and do not make it yearn for its young." He sought it among his own camels and could not find it. He found it with a cousin of his called Sinān b. Ẓufayr, and he requested it from him, and Nuqādah drove it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He wiped its udder and called Nuqādah, and he milked it until, when there remained in it a remainder of its milk, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Nuqādah, leave what invites the milk." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank and gave his companions to drink from the milk of that she-camel, and he gave Nuqādah his leftover, and said: "O Allah, bless it as a she-camel and bless the one who granted it." Nuqādah said: I said: And the one who brought it, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: "And the one who brought it."
