Translation
✧ Mention of his ﷺ following ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf in the morning prayer Ibn Saʿd narrated with a sound chain of transmission from al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah ؓ that he said: We were between al-Ḥijr and Tabūk when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to relieve himself, and whenever he went he would go far away. I followed him with water after dawn—and in another narration before dawn—so the people became late in their prayer, that is, the dawn prayer, until they feared the sun. They put forward ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf ؓ, and he led them in prayer. I carried with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a waterskin containing water, and he was wearing a Roman woolen jubbah. When he finished, I poured water over him, and he washed his face. Then he wanted to wash his forearms, but the sleeve of the jubbah was tight, so he brought his hands out from beneath the jubbah and washed them. I bent down to remove his leather socks, but he said: "Leave them, for I put them on in a state of purity." So he wiped over them. Then we reached ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, who had already performed one rakʿah. The people glorified Allah for ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf when they saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to the point that they were almost tempted. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān wanted to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him to remain. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed one rakʿah behind ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said the salutation, the people jumped up, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to make up the remaining rakʿah. Then he said the salutation after finishing it and said: "You have done well—or you have been correct—so he deemed them fortunate for having prayed the prayer at its proper time. Indeed, no prophet ever passed away until a righteous man from his community led him in prayer." Muslim narrated something similar.
