The Expedition of Tabūk
ذِكْرُ مَنِ اسْتَعْمَلَهُ ﷺ عَلَى الْحَرَسِ بِتَبُوكَ قَالَ شُيُوخُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ: اسْتَعْمَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى حَرَسِهِ بِتَبُوكَ مِنْ يَوْمِ قَدِمَ إِلَى أَنْ رَحَلَ مِنْهَا عَبَّادُ - بِفَتْحِ الْعَيْنِ الْمُهْمَلَةِ وَتَشْدِيدِ الْمُوَحَّدَةِ - ابْنُ بِشْرٍ - بِكَسْرِ الْمُوَحَّدَةِ ؓ فَكَانَ عَبَّادٌ يَطُوفُ فِي أَصْحَابِهِ عَلَى الْعَسْكَرِ، فَغَدَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، مَا زِلْنَا نَسْمَعُ صَوْتَ تَكْبِيرٍ مِنْ وَرَائِنَا حَتَّى أَصْبَحْنَا، فَوَلَّيْتَ أَحَدَنَا يَطُوفُ عَلَى الْحَرَسِ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ "مَا فَعَلْتُ، وَلَكِنْ عَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ بَعْضُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ انْتَدَبْ" فَقَالَ سِلْكَانُ - بِكَسْرِ السِّينِ الْمُهْمَلَةِ وَسُكُونِ اللَّامِ - ابْنُ سَلَامَةَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، خَرَجْتُ فِي عَشَرَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى خَيْلِنَا فَكُنَّا نَحْرُسُ الْحَرَسَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ "رَحِمَ اللَّهُ حَرَسَ الْحَرَسِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَلَكُمْ قِيرَاطٌ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ عَلَى كُلِّ مَنْ حَرَسْتُمْ مِنَ النَّاسِ جَمِيعًا أَوْ دَابَّةٍ".
Translation
✧ Mention of whom he ﷺ appointed over the guard at Tabūk The shaykhs of Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed over his guard at Tabūk, from the day he arrived until he departed from it, ʿAbbād—with a fatḥah on the unpointed ʿayn and a doubling of the pointed bāʾ—b. Bishr—with a kasrah on the pointed bāʾ— ؓ. ʿAbbād used to go around among his companions over the army. One day he came in the morning to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, we kept hearing the sound of takbīr behind us until morning came, so one of us went around on guard duty. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I did not do that, but perhaps some of the Muslims volunteered for it." Salkān—with a kasrah on the unpointed sīn and a sukūn on the lām—b. Salāmah said: O Messenger of Allah, I went out with ten of the Muslims on our horses, and we guarded the guard. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah have mercy on the guards of the guard in the way of Allah. And for you is a qīrāṭ of reward for every person or beast among all the people whom you guarded."
