Translation
✧ When he grew up, he married a woman from the Amalekites, and his father commanded him to separate from her, so he separated from her. Al-Umawī said: She was ʿImārah bt. Saʿd b. Usāmah b. Akīl al-ʿImlāqī. Then he married another, and he commanded him to keep her, so he kept her, and she was al-Sayyidah bt. Muḍāḍ b. ʿAmr al-Jurhumī. It is said: This was a third, and she bore him twelve male children, and Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, may God have mercy on him, named them; they are: Nābit, Qaydar, Adhbal, Mīshā, Mismaʿ, Māsh, Dūmā, Udar, Yaṭūr, Bansh, Ṭīmā, and Qaydhumā. Thus the People of the Book mention them in their book, and according to them they are the twelve princes who were promised, whose mention has preceded, but they lied in their interpretation of that. It is said Qaydhār, from whom God spread the Arabs, and it is said: Rather the Arabs are from Nābit and from Qaydar. It is said: The pure Arabs were called al-ʿArabah because Ishmael grew up in ʿArabah, which is part of Tihāmah. It is said: Rather because the first to speak the tongue of the Arabs was Yaʿrub b. Qaḥṭān, and he is the father of Yemen, so they are the pure Arabs. And all the Arabs of the Hijaz trace their lineage to his two sons Nābit and Qaydār. And Ishmael ﷺ married his daughter Nasamah to the son of his brother al-ʿĪṣ b. Isḥāq, and she bore him al-Rūm, and they are called Banū al-Aṣfar because of a yellowness that was in al-ʿĪṣ, and she bore him al-Yūnān according to one of the opinions, and from the descendants of al-ʿĪṣ are al-Ashbān, and it is said: From both of them as well. And Ibn Jarīr, may God have mercy on him, withheld judgment.
