Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)
Translation
✧ The Friend (al-Khalīl) had sons, but the most famous of them were the two brothers, the two great prophets and messengers, the elder and greater of whom was, according to the sound view, the one who was to be sacrificed: Ishmael (Ismāʿīl), the firstborn of Abraham the Friend (Ibrāhīm al-Khalīl), from Hagar (Hājar) the Coptic Egyptian, upon her be peace, from the great and glorious one. Whoever says that the one to be sacrificed was Isaac (Isḥāq) has only received that from the transmitters of the Children of Israel, who altered, distorted, and interpreted the Torah and the Gospel, and who contradicted with their own hands what is in the revelation concerning this. For Abraham was commanded to sacrifice his firstborn son—and in one narration, his only son. Whatever the case, it was Ishmael, by explicit proof. For in the text of their own book, it states that Ishmael was born when Abraham was eighty-six years old, and Isaac was only born after one hundred years of the Friend's life had passed. So Ishmael is indisputably the firstborn, and he is the only son in both form and meaning in every case. As for form, because he alone was his son for more than thirteen years. As for his being the only one in meaning, he is the one whom his father took on the migration, with his mother Hagar, when he was a small suckling infant, as it is said. He placed them in the valleys of the mountains of Fārān—these are the mountains around Makkah, an excellent resting place—and left them there with only a little provision and water. That was out of trust in God and reliance upon Him. So God Most High encompassed them with His care and sufficiency, and how excellent is the Reckoner, the Sufficient, the Trustee, and the Guarantor. . So this is the only son in form and meaning. But where is the one who perceives this secret? And where is the one who reaches this station? Its meaning is not grasped, and its knowledge is not encompassed, except by every noble prophet.
