The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)

Translation

✧ Mention of the verse concerning His protection ﷺ from one who intended to assassinate him Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from his shaykhs; they said: Abū Burdah—with ḍammah on the unpointed bāʾ, sukūn on the rāʾ, and the unpointed dāl—b. Niyār ؓ said: When we were at Awṭās, we alighted beneath a tree and looked toward a great tree. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ alighted beneath it and hung up his sword and his bow. I was the closest of my companions to him, and nothing startled me except his voice: “O Abū Burdah.” I said, “At your service, O Messenger of Allah,” and I came quickly. There was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting with a man sitting beside him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “This man came to me while I was sleeping, drew my sword, and stood with it over my head. I awoke while he was saying, ‘O Muḥammad, who will protect you from me?’ I said, ‘Allah Almighty.’” Abū Burdah said: I drew my sword, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Sheathe your sword.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, let me strike the neck of the enemy of Allah, for he is one of the spies of the polytheists.” He said to me: “Be quiet, O Abū Burdah.” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said nothing to him and did not punish him. He said: I began shouting about him in the camp to make him known to the people so that someone might kill him without the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. As for me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had restrained me from killing him. The Prophet ﷺ kept saying: “O Abū Burdah, leave the man alone.” So I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: “O Abū Burdah, Allah is my protector and my guardian until He makes His religion prevail over all religion.”
