The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
Translation
✧ Mention of Shaybah b. ʿUthmān’s intention—before he became a Muslim—to assassinate the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he saw him among a small group, and the signs that occurred in that. Ibn Saʿd and Ibn ʿAsākir narrated from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUbayd, and Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, al-Ṭabarānī, al-Bayhaqī, Abū Nuʿaym, and Ibn ʿAsākir from ʿIkrimah—may Allah Almighty have mercy on them—they said: Shaybah said: When it was the year of the conquest, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah by force, and he raided Ḥunayn. I said: I will march with Quraysh against Hawāzin, and perhaps if they become entangled I might catch Muḥammad off guard. I remembered my father and Ḥamzah’s killing of him, and my uncle and ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib’s killing of him. I said: Today I will achieve my vengeance against Muḥammad, and I will be the one who carried out the vengeance of all Quraysh. I say: If none of the Arabs and non-Arabs remained except that he followed Muḥammad, I would never follow him ever. So I lay in wait for what I had set out for, and the matter only grew stronger in my soul. When the people became entangled, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted from his mule, drew his sword, and I drew near to him, intending what I intended—and in another narration: when his companions were routed, I came to him from his right, and there was al-ʿAbbās standing over him in a white coat of mail. I said: His uncle will never desert him. I came to him from his left, and there was Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith. I said: His cousin will never desert him. I came to him from behind, and nothing remained except that I strike him a blow with the sword, when a flame of fire rose before me between me and him, as if it were lightning. I feared that it would consume me, so I put my hand over my eyes, fearing for them, and I walked backward, and I knew that he was protected. He turned to me and said: “O Shayb, come near to me.” I drew near to him, and he placed his hand on my chest and said: “O Allah, remove the devil from him.” I raised my head to him, and he was dearer to me than my hearing, my sight, and my heart. Then he said: “O Shaybah, fight the disbelievers.” He said: I advanced before him, loving—by Allah—to shield him with myself from everything. When Hawāzin was routed, he returned to his dwelling, and I entered upon him, and he said: “Praise be to Allah who willed for you good, better than what you willed.” Then he told me what I had intended—ﷺ. In the narration of Ibn Isḥāq: Shaybah b. ʿUthmān b. Abī Ṭalḥah, brother of the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār, said: I said: Today I will achieve my vengeance (against Muḥammad)—his father had been killed on the day of Uḥud—today I will kill Muḥammad. He said: I circled around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to kill him, but something came over me until it covered my heart, and I could not bear that, and I knew that he was protected from me.
