Translation
✧ Mention of the bearer of good tidings who came to Madinah with the defeat of Hawāzin Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from Dāwūd b. al-Ḥuṣayn, who said: The bearer of good tidings of the Messenger of God ﷺ to the people of Madinah concerning the victory God—Exalted is He—granted him and the defeat of Hawāzin was Nuhayk b. Aws al-Ashhalī. He set out that day in the evening, and he took the route through Awṭās until he emerged at Ghamrah. There he found the people saying, “Muḥammad has been defeated with a defeat the like of which he has never been defeated before, and Mālik b. ʿAwf has prevailed over his army.” He said: I said, “They speak falsehood. By God, God—Exalted is He—has granted His Messenger ﷺ victory and given him as spoils their women and their children.” He said: I did not cease treading upon the news until it ceased at Maʿdin Banī Sulaym or close to it. I arrived in Madinah, having traveled from the beginning of Awṭās in three nights, and I did not spend the evening on my mount more than I rode it. When I reached the prayer ground, I called out: “Rejoice, O assembly of Muslims, at the safety of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the Muslims. God—Exalted is He—has granted him victory over Hawāzin and wrought destruction upon them. He took their women captive and gained their wealth as spoils, and I left the spoils in his hands being gathered.” The people gathered, praising God—Exalted is He—for the safety of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the Muslims. Then I went to the houses of the Prophet's ﷺ wives and informed them, and they praised God—Exalted is He—for that. He said: The first defeat in which the Muslims were defeated spread in every direction until God—Exalted is He—disproved their talk.
