The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
ثبات أم سليم بنت ملحان عَنْ أَنَسٍ ؓ قَالَ: اتَّخَذَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ خِنْجَرًا أَيَّامَ حُنَيْنٍ، فَكَانَ مَعَهَا، فَلَقِيَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ وَمَعَهَا الْخِنْجَرُ، فَقَالَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ: مَا هَذَا ؟ قَالَتْ: إِنْ دَنَا مِنِّي بَعْضُ الْمُشْرِكِينَ أَبْعَجُ بِهِ بَطْنَهُ، فَقَالَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ: أَمَا تَسْمَعُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا تَقُولُ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ ؟ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - ﷺ فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَقْتُلُ مَنْ يَعْدُونَا مِنَ الطُّلَقَاءِ، انْهَزَمُوا عَنْكَ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَدْ كَفَى وَأَحْسَنَ يَا أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ”. ثبات أم عمارة بنت كعب وَرَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ عِمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ قَالَ: قُلْتُ أُمُّ عِمَارَةَ: لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ حُنَيْنٍ وَالنَّاسُ مُنْهَزِمُونَ فِي كُلِّ وَجْهٍ، وَكُنَّا أَرْبَعَ نِسْوَةٍ، وَفِي يَدِي سَيْفٌ لِي صَارِمٌ، وَأُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ مَعَهَا خِنْجَرٌ قَدْ حَزَمَتْهُ عَلَى وَسَطِهَا، وَإِنَّهَا يَوْمَئِذٍ حَامِلٌ بِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، وَأُمُّ سُلَيْطٍ، وَأُمُّ الْحَارِثِ. قَالَ شُيُوخُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ: فَجَعَلَتْ أُمُّ عِمَارَةَ تَصِيحُ يَا لَلْأَنْصَارِ: أَيَّةُ عَادَةٍ هَذِهِ. مَا لَكُمْ وَالْفِرَارِ ؟ ! قَالَتْ: وَأَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ هَوَازِنَ عَلَى جُمَلٍ أَوْرَقَ مَعَهُ لِوَاءٌ يُوضَعُ جَمَلُهُ فِي أَثَرِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَأَعْتَرِضُ لَهُ فَأَضْرِبُ عُرْقُوبَ الْجَمَلِ. فَيَقَعُ عَلَى عَجُزِهِ وَأَشُدُّ عَلَيْهِ، وَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَضْرِبُهُ حَتَّى أَثْبَتُّهُ، وَأَخَذْتُ سَيْفًا لَهُ. وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَائِمٌ، مُصْلِتٌ السَّيْفَ بِيَدِهِ، قَدْ طَرَحَ غِمْدَهُ يُنَادِي: «يَا أَصْحَابَ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ” فَكَرَّ الْأَنْصَارُ، وَوَقَفَتْ هَوَازِنُ قَدْرَ حَلَبَ نَاقَةٍ فَتُوحٍ، ثُمَّ كَانَتْ إِيَّاهَا، فَوَ اللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُ هَزِيمَةً قَطُّ كَانَتْ مِثْلَهَا، قَدْ ذَهَبُوا فِي كُلِّ وَجْهٍ، فَرَجَعَ إِلَيَّ أَبْنَائِي جَمِيعًا: حَبِيبٌ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَبْنَاءَ زَيْدٍ بِأَسَارَى مُكَتَّفِينَ، فَأَقُومُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ فَأَضْرِبُ عُنُقَ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ، وَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَأْتُونَ بِالْأُسَارَى فَرَأَيْتُ فِي بَنِي مَازِنٍ ابْنَيِ النَّجَّارِ ثَلَاثِينَ أَسِيرًا، وَكَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ بَلَغَ أَقْصَى هَزِيمَتِهِمْ مَكَّةَ، ثُمَّ كَرُّوا بَعْدُ وَتَرَاجَعُوا، فَأَسْهَمَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَمِيعًا، وَكَانَتْ أُمُّ الْحَارِثِ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةُ آخِذَةً بِخِطَامِ جَمَلِ الْحَارِثِ زَوْجهَا، وَكَانَ يُسَمَّى الْمِجْسَارَ فَقَالَتْ: يَا حَارُّ أَتَتْرُكُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالنَّاسُ يُوَلُّونَ مُنْهَزِمِينَ ؟ ! وَهِيَ لَا تُفَارِقُهُ، قَالَتْ: فَمَرَّ عَلَيَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَقُلْتُ: يَا عُمَرُ مَا هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: أَمْرُ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى.
Translation
✧ The steadfastness of Umm Sulaym bt. Milḥān On the authority of Anas ؓ, he said: Umm Sulaym acquired a dagger during the days of Ḥunayn, and it was with her. Abū Ṭalḥah met Umm Sulaym, and the dagger was with her. Abū Ṭalḥah said: “What is this?” She said: “If any of the polytheists comes near me, I will rip open his belly with it.” Abū Ṭalḥah said: “Do you not hear, O Messenger of Allah, what Umm Sulaym says?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed. She said: “O Messenger of Allah, shall I kill those who attack us from among the ṭulaqāʾ? They have fled from you.” He said: “Allah, Exalted is He, has sufficed and been gracious, O Umm Sulaym.” The steadfastness of Umm ʿImārah bt. Kaʿb Muḥammad b. ʿUmar reported from ʿImārah b. Ghaziyyah, who said: Umm ʿImārah said: On the day of Ḥunayn, when the people were routed in every direction, we were four women. In my hand was my sharp sword. Umm Sulaym had a dagger that she had bound around her waist, and on that day she was pregnant with ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah, along with Umm Sulayṭ and Umm al-Ḥārith. The teachers of Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: Umm ʿImārah began shouting: “O Ansar! What custom is this? What is the matter with you and flight?!” She said: I looked at a man from Hawāzin on a greyish camel, with him a banner, his camel being made to pursue the Muslims. I intercepted him and struck the camel’s hamstring. He fell on his hindquarters, and I pressed against him, and I did not cease striking him until I had disabled him, and I took a sword of his. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing, brandishing a sword in his hand, having cast aside its scabbard, calling out: “O companions of Sūrat al-Baqarah!” The Ansar turned back, and Hawāzin halted for the duration of milking a plentiful camel, then it was their turn. By Allah, I never saw any rout like it. They had gone in every direction. My sons returned to me, all of them: Ḥabīb and ʿAbd Allāh, the two sons of Zayd, with bound captives. I rose toward him in anger and struck the neck of one of them. The people began bringing captives, and I saw among Banū Māzin, the two sons of al-Najjār, thirty captives. The Muslims’ farthest flight had reached Makkah, then afterwards they turned back and retreated. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ assigned shares to all of them. Umm al-Ḥārith al-Anṣāriyyah was holding the halter of the camel of al-Ḥārith, her husband, who was called al-Mijsār. She said: “O Ḥār, will you abandon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the people are turning away in flight?!” She did not leave him. She said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb passed by me, and I said: “O ʿUmar, what is this?” He said: “The command of Allah, Exalted is He.”
