The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)
ذِكْرُ مَنْ ثَبَتَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ رَوَى الْبَيْهَقِيُّ عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ ؓ قَالَ: لَقَدْ حَزَرْتُ مَنْ بَقِيَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ أَدْبَرَ النَّاسُ، فَقُلْتُ: مِائَةُ وَاحِدٍ. وعَنْ أَنَسٍ ؓ: أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيًّا ؓ ضَرَبَ كُلٌّ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِضْعَةَ عَشَرَ ضَرْبَةً - وَابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ وَمِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ: أَبُو دُجَانَةَ، وَحَارِثَةُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ - قَدْ ذَكَرَ فِي ذَلِكَ عِنْدَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ - وَسَعْدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، وَأَبُو بَشِيرٍ - كَمَا فِي حَدِيثِهِ عِنْدَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ - وَأُسَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُضَيْرِ، وَمِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ: شَيْبَةُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْحَجَبِيُّ - كَمَا تَقَدَّمَ - وَمِنْ نِسَاءِ الْأَنْصَارِ: أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ بِنْتُ مِلْحَانَ أُمُّ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، وَأُمُّ عِمَارَةَ نَسِيبَةُ بِنْتُ كَعْبٍ، وَأُمُّ الْحَارِثِ جِدَّةُ عِمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ - بِفَتْحِ الْعَيْنِ، وَكَسْرِ الزَّايِ الْمُعْجَمَتَيْنِ - وَأُمُّ سَلِيطٍ بِنْتُ عُبَيْدٍ - قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ: يُقَالُ إِنَّ الْمِائَةَ الصَّابِرَةَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَلَاثَةٌ وَثَلَاثُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَسِتَّةٌ وَسِتُّونَ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ. وعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ فَوَلَّى النَّاسُ وَثَبَتَ مَعَهُ ثَمَانُونَ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ، فَنَكَصْنَا عَلَى أَعْقَابِنَا نَحَوَا مِنْ ثَمَانِينَ قَدَمًا، وَلَمْ نُوَلِّهِمُ الدُّبُرَ وَفِيمَنْ ثَبَتَ مَعَهُ مِنْ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ، وَمِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَالْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، وَأَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، وَابْنُهُ، وَالْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ، وَرَبِيعَةُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، وَأُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ. وَأَيْمَنُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، قُتِلَ يَوْمَئِذٍ قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: اسْمُ ابْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ جَعْفَرٌ، وَاسْمُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ الْمُغِيرَةُ وَبَعْضُ النَّاسِ يَعُدُّ فِيهِمْ قُثَمَ بْنَ الْعَبَّاسِ، وَلَا يَعُدُّ ابْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ.
Translation
✧ Mention of those who stood firm with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Ḥunayn Al-Bayhaqī narrated from Ḥārithah b. al-Nuʿmān ؓ that he said: I counted those who remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the people turned back, and I said: one hundred and one. And from Anas ؓ: that Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, and ʿAlī ؓ each struck on that day some ten-odd blows - along with Ibn Masʿūd ؓ and from the Anṣār: Abū Dujānah, and Ḥārithah b. al-Nuʿmān - Muhammad b. ʿUmar mentioned that - and Saʿd b. ʿUbādah, and Abū Bashīr - as in his account from Muhammad b. ʿUmar - and Usayd b. al-Ḥuḍayr, and from the people of Makkah: Shaybah b. ʿUthmān al-Ḥajabī - as previously mentioned - and from the women of the Anṣār: Umm Sulaym bt. Milḥān, the mother of Anas b. Mālik, and Umm ʿImārah Nasībah bt. Kaʿb, and Umm al-Ḥārith, the grandmother of ʿImārah b. Ghaziyyah - with fatḥah on the ʿayn and kasrah on the dotted zāy - and Umm Salīṭ bt. ʿUbayd - Muhammad b. ʿUmar said: it is said that the hundred who stood firm that day were thirty-three from the Muhājirūn and sixty-six from the Anṣār. And from Ibn Masʿūd who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Ḥunayn, and the people fled while eighty men from the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār stood firm with him. We fell back on our heels about eighty feet, but we did not turn our backs to them. Among those who stood firm with him from the Muhājirūn were Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and from his household ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith, and his son, and al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās, and Rabīʿah b. al-Ḥārith, and Usāmah b. Zayd. And Ayman b. ʿUbayd, who was killed that day. Ibn Hishām said: the name of the son of Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith is Jaʿfar, and the name of Abū Sufyān is al-Mughīrah. Some people count among them Qutham b. al-ʿAbbās, and do not count the son of Abū Sufyān.
