The Expedition of Ḥunayn (Hawāzin)

Translation

✧ Mention of the Muslims' admiration of their large numbers on the day of Ḥunayn Yūnus b. Bukayr narrated in the additions to the Maghāzī from al-Rabīʿ b. Anas who said: A man said on the day of Ḥunayn: "We will not be defeated due to smallness of numbers," and that distressed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the defeat occurred. Ibn al-Mundhir narrated from al-Ḥasan who said: When the people of Makkah and the people of Madinah gathered, they said: "Now we will fight, since we have gathered," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked what they said because of their admiration of their large numbers, so they met and were defeated until no one stood over another. Abū al-Shaykh and al-Ḥākim – and he deemed it sound – and Ibn Mardawayh and al-Bazzār narrated from Anas ؓ who said: When on the day of Ḥunayn the people of Makkah and the people of Madinah gathered, their large numbers pleased them, and the people said: "Today, by Allah, we will fight," and in al-Bazzār's wording, a young man from the Anṣār said on the day of Ḥunayn: "We will not be defeated today due to smallness of numbers," then no sooner did we meet our enemy than the people were routed and turned back fleeing. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar narrated from Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī: A man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If we met Banū Shaybān we would not care, and no one will defeat us today due to smallness of numbers." Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the people of Makkah narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said when he departed from Makkah to Ḥunayn, and saw the large number of Allah's armies with him: "We will not be defeated today due to smallness of numbers," thus it is in this narration. The correct view is that the one who said that was other than the Prophet ﷺ, as preceded. Ibn Isḥāq said: Some people claimed that a man from Banū Bakr said it. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar narrated from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab – may Allah Almighty have mercy on him – that Abū Bakr ؓ said: "O Messenger of Allah, we will not be defeated today due to smallness of numbers," thus it is in this narration, and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr asserted that. Ibn ʿUqbah said: When the people awoke and looked at one another, Abū Sufyān, his son Muʿāwiyah, Ṣafwān b. Umayyah, and Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām appeared on a hill watching to see for whom the turn of fortune would be.
