Translation
✧ Mention of his ﷺ borrowing coats of mail from Ṣafwān b. Umayyah Ibn Isḥāq narrated, from the transmission of Yūnus b. Bukayr, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh ؓ, and from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm, and al-Zuhrī: that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ resolved to march to Hawāzin, it was mentioned to him that Ṣafwān b. Umayyah had coats of mail and weapons. So he sent to him—while he was then a polytheist—and said: [O Abā Umayyah, lend us this weapon of yours with which we may meet our enemy]. Ṣafwān said: "By force, O Muḥammad?" He said: "No, rather a guaranteed loan until we return it to you." He said: "There is no harm in that," and he gave him one hundred coats of mail with the weapons sufficient for them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him to undertake their transport, and he carried them to Awṭās. It is also said that he ﷺ borrowed from him four hundred coats of mail with what would make them serviceable. Al-Suhaylī said: In the expedition of Ḥunayn, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ borrowed from Nawfal b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib three thousand spears, and he ﷺ said: "It is as if I am looking at these spears of yours breaking the backs of the polytheists." A benefit: Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, said: The imam may borrow the weapons and equipment of the polytheists to fight his enemy, just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ borrowed the coats of mail of Ṣafwān, while he was then a polytheist.
