The Detachment of Khālid b. al-Walīd to Demolish al-ʿUzzā

Translation

✧ The Detachment of Khālid b. al-Walīd to Demolish al-ʿUzzā The Prophet ﷺ sent Khālid ؓ to al-ʿUzzā to demolish it, and that was in the eighth year of the Hijrah. He set out with thirty of his companions. When he reached it, he demolished its house and came to the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Did you see anything?” He said: “No.” He said: “Then you have not demolished it. Return to it and demolish it.” So Khālid went back, full of anger. When the custodians saw Khālid, they took to the mountain, saying: “O ʿUzzā, bewilder him! O ʿUzzā, blind him! May you not die in spite of us!” Then there came out to him an old black woman, naked, with disheveled hair. Abū al-Ṭufayl added: she was throwing dust on her head and face. Khālid struck her while saying: O ʿUzzā, your ingratitude, not your glorification! I have seen that God has humiliated you. He cut her in two, then returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him. He said: “Yes, that was al-ʿUzzā. She has despaired of ever being worshipped in your lands.”
