The Detachment of Khālid b. al-Walīd ᴿᴬ after the Conquest to Banū Jadhīmah of Kinānah

Translation

✧ [The ḥadīth of Ibn Abī Ḥadrad, the Jadhīmī youth, on the Day of the Conquest] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas narrated to me, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, who said: I was that day among the cavalry of Khālid b. al-Walīd. A youth from Banū Jadhīmah, who was of my age, said to me while his hands had been tied to his neck with a rope and women were gathered not far from him: "O youth." I said, "What do you want?" He said, "Will you take this rope and lead me to these women so that I may fulfill a need of mine with them, then return me, and do with me whatever seems good to you?" He said: I said, "By God, what you ask is easy." So I took his rope and led him by it until he stood before them. He said, "Greetings for a life that is slipping away, Ḥubaysh: I showed you when I sought you and found you at Ḥalyah, or came upon you at al-Khawāniq, Was it not right that a lover should receive who toiled through night journeys and hardships? So I have no fault. I said, when our families were together, “Reward me with love before one of the calamities of separation.” Reward me with love before the journeying distances, and before the commander takes away the departing beloved. For I have not neglected a secret entrusted to me, nor has any sight after you seemed pleasing to my eye, Except that what befell the tribe occupied me from love, unless there is mutual affection. Ibn Hishām said: Most scholars of poetry reject the last two verses as being his. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas narrated to me, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī, who said: She said, "And you, may you live seven and ten, odd and eight in succession." He said: Then I turned away with him, and his neck was struck. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Firās b. Abī Sunbulah al-Aslamī narrated to me, from elders among them, from one of them who was present: They said: She rose to him when his neck was struck, and fell upon him, and kept kissing him until she died beside him. Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī narrated by way of al-Ḥumaydī, from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. Nawfal b. Musāḥiq, that he heard a man of Muzaynah called Ibn ʿIṣām, from his father, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ sent out a raiding party, he would say, "If you see a mosque or hear a muezzin, do not kill anyone." He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent us in a raiding party and commanded us thus. We went out toward Tihāmah and overtook a man driving women in litters. We said to him, "Submit (become a Muslim)." He said, "What is Islam?" We informed him of it, and he did not know it. He said, "Tell me, if I do not do it, what will you do?" We said, "We will kill you." He said, "Will you give me respite until I catch up with the women in the litters?" We said, "Yes, and we will catch up with you." He said: He caught up with the women in the litters and said, "Greetings, Ḥubaysh, before life runs out." The other woman said, "Submit ten, nine odd, and eight in succession." Then he mentioned the preceding poetry up to his saying: "and before the commander takes away the departing beloved." Then he returned to us and said, "Your affair." He said: We brought him forward and struck his neck. He said: The other woman came down from her howdah and wailed over him until she died. Then al-Bayhaqī narrated by way of Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī: Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Ḥarb al-Marwazī narrated to us: ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Wāqid narrated to us, from his father, from Yazīd al-Naḥwī, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of God ﷺ sent a raiding party and they took captives. Among them was a man who said to them, "I am not one of them. I fell in love with a woman and followed her. Let me look at her once, then do with me what seems good to you." He said: There was a tall, brown-skinned woman. He said to her, "Greetings, Ḥubaysh, before life runs out." Then he mentioned the two verses with their meaning. He said: She said, "Yes, may I be your ransom." He said: They brought him forward and struck his neck. The woman came and fell upon him, gasped once or twice, then died. When they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him the news, he said, "Was there not among you a merciful man?" ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ḥadrad al-Aslamī said: I was that day in Khālid's army. We followed the tracks of women in litters going up, driven by youths. He said, "Overtake those." He said: We went out after them until we overtook them as they went on, and a young man stood for us in the road. When we reached him, he began fighting us and saying: Lift the edges of the trailing garments and be afraid, the gait of serpents as if you were not frightened. If the women are defended today, they are defended. We fought him for a long time and killed him. We went on until we caught up with the women in litters. A youth came out to us like the first one and began fighting us, saying: I swear, no lion with a thick mane that roars between a tamarisk tree and a hollow, that seizes young men alone at dawn, is more truthful in courage than I. We fought him until we killed him. We caught up with the women in litters and took them. Among them was a youth with a bright face and a yellowish pallor like one exhausted. We bound him with a rope and brought him forward to kill him. He said to us, "Would you like something good?" We said, "What is it?" He said, "Let me catch up with the women in the litters at the bottom of the valley, then kill me." We said, "We will." We put him opposite the women in the litters. When he was where they could hear his voice, he called out at the top of his voice, "Greetings, Ḥubaysh, upon the loss of life." A fair, beautiful girl came to him and said, "And you, greetings upon the multitude of enemies and the severity of trial." He said, "Peace be upon you forever, even if you remain for an age." She said, "And you, peace be upon you ten, and even in succession, and three odd." Then he said: If they kill me, O Ḥubaysh, your love has left them nothing from me but the burning of the breast. You are the one who emptied my flesh of my blood and my bones, and let tears flow down on my chest. She said to him: We wept once at your parting, and again, and we consoled you in hardship and ease. And you have not gone far, so enjoy, O youth of passion, beautiful in chastity and affection, in concealment. He said: I showed you when I sought you and found you at Ḥalyah, or came upon you at al-Khawāniq, Was it not right that a lover should receive who toiled through night journeys in the hardships? So I have no fault. I said, when we were neighbors, “Reward me with love before one of the calamities of separation.” Reward me with love before the journeying distances, and before the commander takes away the departing beloved. For I have not neglected a secret I hold, nor has any sight since you departed seemed pleasing to me, Except that what befell the tribe occupied me, and no mention except that it be for one enamored. Then they brought him forward and struck his neck. This poetry belongs to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlqamah al-Kinānī, of Jadhīmah, with Ḥubayshah bt. Ḥubaysh al-Kināniyyah. He went out with his mother while he was a boy nearing puberty to visit a female neighbor of hers. She had a daughter named Ḥubayshah bt. Ḥubaysh. When ʿAbd Allāh saw her, he fell in love with her, and she took hold of his heart. His mother stayed with her neighbor, and ʿAbd Allāh returned to his family. Then he returned to fetch his mother after two days and found Ḥubayshah adorned for some occasion in the tribe. His admiration for her increased, and his mother departed. He walked with her saying: I do not know—no, indeed I do know— which is better, the falling rain or Ḥubaysh, Ḥubayshah! By the One who created all creatures, for the lovesick there is no life with us. His mother heard him but pretended not to notice. Then he saw a gazelle on a hill and said: O mother, tell me without lying, for one who asks the truth does not want falsehood. Is that one more beautiful, or a gazelle on a hill? No, rather Ḥubayshah, in my eyes and in my desire. His mother rebuked him and said, "What is this to you? I have married you to your cousin, and she is one of the most beautiful of those women." ʿUmayr's wife came and told her the news and said, "Adorn your daughter for him." She did so and brought her in to him, and he looked down. His mother said, "Which of the two is now more beautiful?" He said: When Ḥubayshah is hidden from me once by fate, I possess neither patience nor endurance. It is as if the chest feels the heat of the blaze, the burning of ghaḍā wood, and the heart is kindled into coals. He began corresponding with the girl, and she corresponded with him, and she became attached to him as he to her, and he composed much poetry about her. Among that was: Ḥubayshah, will my grandfather and yours unite my household with yours, and my people with your people? And will I wrap myself once in your garment in the desert between the two stony tracts toward the palms? When her family learned of their affair, they veiled her from him, and his passion increased. They said to her, "Promise to meet him at the acacia tree. When he comes to you, say to him, 'I adjure you by God, if you love me, for by God there is no one on earth more hateful to me than you.' We will be near, hearing what you say." She promised him, and they sat nearby. He came for his appointment with her. When he drew near, her eyes filled with tears, and she turned toward her family sitting there. He knew that they were near, and the situation was made clear to him, so he said: If you say what they said, you have increased my grief, though no secret or concealment remains. My love was not for a favor you gave so that frowning and abandonment could divert me from you. Of all things I will not forget her affection and her glance, until the grave hides me. After that, the Prophet ﷺ sent Khālid b. al-Walīd, and what was mentioned earlier happened.
