The Conquest of Makkah
إِخْبَارِهِ ﷺ ذَا الْجَوْشَنِ بَأَنَّهُ سَيَظْهَرُ عَلَى قُرَيْشٍ رَوَى ابْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ السَّبِيعِيِّ - رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى - قَالَ: قَدِمَ ذُو الْجَوْشَنِ الْكِلَابِيُّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ: «مَا يَمْنَعُكَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ ؟ ” قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ قَوْمَكَ كَذَّبُوكَ وَأَخْرَجُوكَ وَقَاتَلُوكَ، فَأَنْظُرُ، فَإِنْ ظَهَرْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ آمَنْتُ بِكَ وَاتَّبَعْتُكَ، وَإِنْ ظَهَرُوا عَلَيْكَ لَمْ أَتَّبِعْكَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا ذَا الْجَوْشَنِ لَعَلَّكَ إِنْ بَقِيتَ قَلِيلًا أَنْ تَرَى ظُهُورِي عَلَيْهِمْ” قَالَ فَوَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي لَبِضَرِيِّهِ إِذْ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا رَاكِبٌ مِنْ قِبَلِ مَكَّةَ، فَقُلْنَا مَا الْخَبَرُ ؟ قَالَ: ظَهَرَ مُحَمَّدٌ عَلَى أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ، فَكَانَ ذُو الْجَوْشَنِ يَتَوَجَّعُ عَلَى تَرْكِهِ الْإِسْلَامَ حِينَ دَعَاهُ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ: وَأَسْلَمَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ، وَرَوَى عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - ﷺ.
Translation
✧ The Prophet's ﷺ informing Dhū al-Jawshan that he would prevail over Quraysh Ibn Saʿd narrated from Ibn Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī — may Allah Almighty have mercy on him — who said: Dhū al-Jawshan al-Kilābī came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to him: “What prevents you from Islam?” He said: “I saw your people accuse you of lying, expel you, and fight you, so I am watching. If you prevail over them, I will believe in you and follow you, but if they prevail over you, I will not follow you.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “O Dhū al-Jawshan, perhaps if you remain a little while you will see my victory over them.” He said: “By Allah, I was at Ḍarīyah when a rider came to us from the direction of Makkah. We said: ‘What is the news?’ He said: ‘Muḥammad has prevailed over the people of Makkah.’ Dhū al-Jawshan used to lament his leaving Islam when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him to it. I say: He embraced Islam after that, and narrated from the Prophet ﷺ.
