Translation
✧ The duration of his stay in Makkah, ﷺ: There is no disagreement that he, peace and blessings be upon him, remained for the rest of the month of Ramadan shortening the prayer and not fasting. This is evidence for those scholars who said: If a traveler has not resolved to stay, he may shorten the prayer and not fast up to eighteen days, according to one of the two opinions; and in the other opinion, as is established in its proper place. Al-Bukhari said: Abu Nuʿaym narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us (ḥ); and Qabīṣah narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us, from Yaḥyā b. Abī Isḥāq, from Anas b. Mālik who said: We stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for ten days, shortening the prayer. The rest of the group narrated it through multiple channels from Yaḥyā b. Abī Isḥāq al-Ḥaḍramī al-Baṣrī, from Anas, similarly. Then al-Bukhari said: ʿAbdān narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: ʿĀṣim informed us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in Makkah for nineteen days, praying two rakʿahs. Al-Bukhari also narrated it from another angle—al-Bukhari added: and Ḥuṣayn, both of them—and Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah narrated it from the ḥadīth of ʿĀṣim b. Sulaymān al-Aḥwal, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās. In a wording of Abū Dāwūd: seventeen. Aḥmad b. Yūnus narrated to us: Abū Shihāb narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: We stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey for nineteen days, shortening the prayer. Ibn ʿAbbās said: So we shorten whatever is between us and nineteen; when we exceed that, we complete it. Abū Dāwūd said: Ibrāhīm b. Mūsā narrated to us: Ibn ʿUlayyah narrated to us: ʿAlī b. Zayd narrated to us, from Abū Naḍrah, from ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn who said: I went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and witnessed the conquest with him. He stayed eighteen nights, praying only two rakʿahs, saying: “O people of the land, pray four, for we are travelers.” Al-Tirmidhī narrated it likewise from the ḥadīth of ʿAlī b. Zayd b. Judʿān and said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth. Then Abū Dāwūd narrated it from the ḥadīth of Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in the year of the conquest for fifteen nights, shortening the prayer. Then he said: More than one narrator reported it from Ibn Isḥāq without mentioning Ibn ʿAbbās. Ibn Idrīs said, from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, and Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, and ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr, and ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, and others, they said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in Makkah for fifteen nights.
