Translation
✧ His ﷺ becoming aware of what Abū Sufyān intended and what he confided to Hind bt. ʿUtbah Ibn Saʿd narrated from Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī — may God Almighty have mercy on him — and al-Ḥākim in al-Iklīl, and al-Bayhaqī from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ, they both said: Abū Sufyān saw the Messenger of God ﷺ walking with the people treading on his heels, so he said to himself: If only I were to resume fighting this man and gather a force against him? Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came and struck his chest with his hand, saying: “Then God would disgrace you.” He said: I repent to God — Exalted be He — and I seek God’s forgiveness for what I uttered; I was not certain that you were a prophet until this very hour, for I was speaking to myself about that. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī — with the dotted dhāl and the lām in his book — collected the ḥadīth of al-Zuhrī from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab — may God Almighty have mercy on him — who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ entered Makkah on the night of the conquest, they persisted in takbīr, tahlīl, and circumambulation of the House until morning. Then Abū Sufyān said to Hind: Do you see this as being from God? She said: Yes, this is from God. He said: Then morning came, and Abū Sufyān went in the morning to the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “You said to Hind: Do you see this as being from God? She said: Yes, this is from God.” Abū Sufyān said: I bear witness that you are the servant of God and His Messenger. By the One by whom oaths are sworn, no one among the people heard this saying of mine except God — Mighty and Majestic — and Hind. Ibn Saʿd, al-Ḥārith b. Abī Usāmah, and Ibn ʿAsākir narrated from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Ḥazm — may God Almighty have mercy on him — who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ went out while Abū Sufyān was sitting in the mosque. Abū Sufyān said: I do not know by what means Muḥammad overcomes us? Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came to him and struck his chest, saying: “By God — Exalted be He — we overcome you.” Abū Sufyān said: I bear witness that you are the Messenger of God. Al-ʿAqīlī and Ibn ʿAsākir narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās — may God Almighty be pleased with them both — who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ met Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb during the circumambulation and said: “O Abū Sufyān, was there between you and Hind such-and-such?” Abū Sufyān said: Hind has divulged my secret; I will certainly do to her such-and-such. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished his circumambulation, he caught up with Abū Sufyān and said: “O Abū Sufyān, do not speak to Hind, for she did not divulge any of your secret.” Abū Sufyān said: I bear witness that you are the Messenger of God — ﷺ.
