Translation
✧ Mention of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performing ṭawāf on foot and what has come that he performed ṭawāf riding Imām Aḥmad, the two Shaykhs, and Ibn Isḥāq related from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions arrived in Makkah, and the fever of Yathrib had weakened them. The polytheists said: ‘Tomorrow there will come a people whom the fever has weakened, and they have met hardship in it.’ They sat on Quʿayqiʿān overlooking al-Ḥajr. Allah Almighty informed His Prophet of what they said. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque, he bared his right arm from his upper garment and said: ‘May Allah have mercy on a man who shows them strength from himself.’ In another narration: ‘Who shows them what they dislike.’ He commanded them to ramal for three rounds, and to walk between the two corners, so that the polytheists might see their vigor. Then he touched the corner and went out trotting with his companions around him, until when the House concealed him from them, he touched the Yemeni corner and walked until he touched the Black Stone, then he trotted likewise for three rounds and walked the rest. Ibn ʿAbbās used to say: ‘People thought that it was not obligatory upon them. That is because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only did it for this clan of Quraysh because of what reached him about them, until he performed the Farewell Pilgrimage and adhered to it, and the sunnah passed with it.’ From Abū al-Ṭufayl who said: I said to Ibn ʿAbbās: ‘Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ramal around the House, and that it is a sunnah.’ He said: ‘They spoke truth and they lied.’ I said: ‘What did they speak truth about and what did they lie about?!’ He said: ‘They spoke truth: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ramal. And they lied: it is not a sunnah. Quraysh at the time of al-Ḥudaybiyah said: “Leave Muḥammad and his companions until they die the death of the worm.” When they made a treaty with him that they would come the following year and stay in Makkah for three days, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived and the polytheists were on the side of Quʿayqiʿān. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: “Perform ramal around the House three times.” He said: And it is not a sunnah. Ibn ʿAbbās said: He did not command them to perform ramal in all the rounds out of consideration for them. The polytheists said: “Are these the ones whom you claimed the fever had weakened? These are more vigorous than such and such. They are not satisfied with walking; indeed they leap like gazelles.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to outmaneuver them as much as he could. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, Ibn Saʿd, and others said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not cease reciting the talbiyah until he touched the corner with his staff. Al-Ḥumaydī, al-Bukhārī, and al-Ismāʿīlī related from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Awfā ؓ who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ʿumrah, we shielded him from the boys of the polytheists, and in one narration from the fools and children, fearing that they might harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Yūnus b. Bukayr – may Allah Almighty have mercy on him – related from Zayd b. Aslam – may Allah Almighty have mercy on them both – that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah in the year of the settlement, and he performed ṭawāf on his she-camel, and touched the corner with his staff. Hishām and Ibn Saʿd said: without any illness – and the Muslims were pressing around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said: In the name of Him besides whose religion there is no religion; in the name of Him whose Messenger is Muḥammad. Clear the way, O sons of the disbelievers, from his path.
