Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah. Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Makkah on the morning of the fourth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. When Mikraz brought Quraysh the news of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, some men among the nobles of the polytheists disdained to look at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ out of anger, rancor, and envy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the sacrificial animals to be driven before him until they were halted at Dhū Ṭuwā. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered on his she-camel al-Qaṣwāʾ with his Companions surrounding him, having girded on their swords, reciting the talbiyah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached Dhū Ṭuwā, he stopped on his riding beast with the Muslims around him. Then he entered through the mountain pass that brings him out overlooking al-Ḥajūn. Al-Bukhārī narrated it without a full chain, as did ʿAbd al-Razzāq, al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Ḥibbān, from Anas ؓ, and Ibn ʿUqbah from al-Zuhrī, and Ibn Isḥāq from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah in the year of the settlement on his she-camel, with ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah holding its halter, and he was saying: Make way, O sons of the disbelievers, from his path; make way, for all good is in his Messenger. O Lord, I believe in his word; I know the right of Allah in accepting it. We have killed you for its interpretation, just as we killed you for its revelation; with a blow that removes heads from their resting place, and makes a friend forget his friend. Ibn Hishām said: "We have killed you for its interpretation," and the rest of the verses, belong to ʿAmmār b. Yāsir on a day other than this one. The evidence for that is that Ibn Rawāḥah only meant the polytheists, and the polytheists did not acknowledge the revelation; rather, those who acknowledged the revelation are the ones killed for its interpretation. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ said: "O Ibn Rawāḥah, in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and in the sanctuary of Allah—Exalted is He—do you recite poetry?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Let him be, O ʿUmar, for it is swifter against them than the piercing of arrows." In another narration: "O ʿUmar, I am listening, so be silent, O ʿUmar." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Ibn Rawāḥah, say: 'There is no god but Allah alone; He helped His servant, strengthened His army, and defeated the confederates alone.'" Ibn Rawāḥah said it, and the people said it as he had said.
