Translation

✧ What the Messenger of God ﷺ drove of sacrificial animals, and his placing the weapons and horses before him Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from ʿAbd Allāh b. Dīnār—may God Almighty have mercy on him—who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ placed Nājiyah b. Jundub al-Aslamī in charge of his sacrificial animals, driving them before him, seeking pasturage among the trees, with him four youths of Aslam. Another added: and Abū Hurayrah. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ drove in the affair sixty camels; and it was said he drove seventy camels with him. He also related from Shuʿbah, the client of Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ garlanded his sacrificial animals with his own hand. He also related from ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar from Qatādah—may God Almighty have mercy on him—who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ carried weapons, helmets, coats of mail, and spears, and led a hundred horses under Muḥammad b. Maslamah. When he reached Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, he sent the horses before him, and placed Bashīr b. Saʿd—with a single-pointed bāʾ and a dotted shīn, of the pattern of amīr—in charge of the weapons. It was said: O Messenger of God, you have carried weapons though they stipulated that we should not enter upon them with weapons except the weapons of the traveler, swords in their sheaths! The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "We shall not enter the sanctuary with them, but they will be near us; if any disturbance arises from the people, the weapons will be near us." So Muḥammad b. Maslamah ؓ went on with the horses to Marr al-Ẓahrān, and found there a number of men of Quraysh. They asked him, and he said: This is the Messenger of God ﷺ; he will arrive at this encampment tomorrow, if God—Almighty—wills. They saw abundant weapons with Bashīr b. Saʿd, and went out swiftly until they came to Quraysh, and told them what they had seen of horses and weapons. Quraysh were alarmed and said: By God, we have done nothing new, and we are keeping to our treaty and our term; so why does Muḥammad raid us with his companions?
