The Compensatory ʿUmrah
Translation
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered his Companions to prepare for the ʿUmrah, and that no one who had witnessed al-Ḥudaybiyah should stay behind. So no one who had witnessed it stayed behind, except men who had been martyred at Khaybar, and men who had died. Some men from the Arabs present in Madinah said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, we have no provisions, and we have no one to feed us. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the Muslims to spend in the way of Allah – Exalted is He – and to give charity, and not to withhold their hands and so perish. They said: O Messenger of Allah, with what shall we give charity when one of us finds nothing? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “With whatever you have, even if it be a piece of a date.” Wakīʿ, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Ibn Saʿīd, Manṣūr, ʿAbd b. Ḥumayd, al-Bukhārī, and al-Bayhaqī in his Sunan narrated from Ḥudhayfah; and Wakīʿ, ʿAbd b. Ḥumayd, and al-Bayhaqī from Ibn ʿAbbās – may Allah – Exalted is He – be pleased with them – and Ibn Jarīr from ʿIkrimah, and Wakīʿ from Mujāhid – may Allah – Exalted is He – have mercy on them both – they said regarding His saying, Exalted is He: And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction [al-Baqarah 195]: Indeed, destruction is abandoning spending in the way of Allah. Destruction is not that a man is killed in the way of Allah, but rather it is withholding in the way of Allah. Spend, even if it be an arrowhead. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed over Madinah Abū Rihm – with ḍammah on the rāʾ, and sukūn on the hāʾ – al-Ghifārī ؓ. Ibn Hishām said: ʿUwayf – with wāw and fāʾ, diminutive of ʿAwf, and it is also said ʿUwayth – with a two-dotted yāʾ then a three-dotted thāʾ – b. al-Aḍbaṭ – with a dotted ḍād, then a bāʾ, then an undotted ṭāʾ – ؓ was appointed. Al-Balādhurī said: He appointed Abū Dharr. It is also said: ʿUwayf b. al-Aḍbaṭ. And Allah knows best.
