Translation

✧ Mention of the ḥadīth of Abū Qatādah, al-Ṣaʿb b. Jaththāmah, and some of those who gave gifts to him Imām Mālik and the Six narrated from Abū Qatādah ؓ who said: One day I was sitting with some men from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ in front of us, while the people were in the state of iḥrām and I was not in iḥrām, in the year of al-Ḥudaybiyah. They spotted a wild donkey while I was busy mending my sandal, and they did not alert me, but they wished that I had seen it. In another narration: I saw my companions looking at something. In another narration: Some of them were laughing to one another. I looked and there was a wild donkey. I got up to my horse and saddled it, then I mounted and forgot the whip and the spear. I said to them: "Hand me the whip and the spear." They said: "By Allah, we will not help you against it." I became angry, dismounted, took them, then mounted and charged at the donkey and hamstrung it. Then I brought it back, already dead. They fell upon it, eating it. Then they became doubtful about eating it while they were in iḥrām. We returned in the evening, and I hid the foreleg for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with me. We caught up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about that. He said to them: "Did any of you order him to attack it or point it out to him?" They said: "No." He said: "Eat what remains of its meat. It is only a provision that Allah has fed you. It is lawful. Do you have any of it with you?" I said: "Yes," and I handed him the foreleg, and he ate it while he was in iḥrām. And from al-Ṣaʿb b. Jaththāmah ؓ that he gave a wild donkey as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at al-Abwāʾ or Waddān, and he returned it to him. When he saw the look on his face, he said: "We did not return it to you except because we are in iḥrām." And Īmāʾ b. Raḥaḍah al-Ghifārī sent him a gift with his son Khufāf b. Īmāʾ ؓ of one hundred sheep and two camels carrying milk. He said: "May Allah bless you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed that. And some of the Bedouins from Waddān gave him a gift of muʿīsh, ʿitr, and ḍaghābīs. He began eating the ḍaghābīs and the ʿitr and liked it. He brought some of it in to Umm Salamah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked this gift and showed his companions that it was a novelty.
