Translation

✧ The Expedition of Dhi Qarad (the Expedition of al-Ghabah): The Expedition of Dhi Qarad took place in the year six of the Hijrah. Its cause was the raid of ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah al-Fazārī, at the head of the horsemen of Ghaṭafān, upon the milch-camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A slave named Rabāḥ was tending them, and with him was Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ, who had gone out with a horse belonging to Ṭalḥah to water it along with the camels. Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ met a slave of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf who was tending his milch-camels, and he informed him that ʿUyaynah had raided the milch-camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So Rabāḥ sent the horse of Ṭalḥah, and he hastened in pursuit of the people until he caught up with them. He kept shooting arrows at them and hurling stones at them until he recovered from them what belonged to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They kept throwing away lances and baggage that they had with them to lighten their load, while Salamah kept skirmishing with them without their being able to get at him. The Prophet ﷺ was informed of what had happened, so he summoned the horsemen, and they called out, "O cavalry of Allah, mount!" Salamah did not cease from that until he saw the cavalry of the Muslims threading through the trees. Muḥriz b. Naḍlah ؓ encountered the people and fought them, and he was killed. Then Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī charged and killed the slayer of Muḥriz, then killed Ḥabīb b. ʿUyaynah. Abū Qatādah also killed Masʿadah al-Fazārī and his nephew. They kept pursuing the people and recovering the milch-camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, appointing Ibn Umm Maktūm over Madinah, and he left Saʿd b. ʿUbādah with three hundred of his people to guard Madinah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Abū Qatādah and said to him ﷺ: "O Allah, bless him in his hair and his skin." And he said: "May your face prosper." I said: "And your face, O Messenger of Allah." Salamah said: "When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The best of our horsemen today is Abū Qatādah, and the best of our footmen is Salamah.'" The Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah. Among those whom the people had taken was a woman belonging to Abū Dharr, and she had escaped from them on al-ʿAḍbāʾ, the she-camel of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Glory be to Allah! What a bad reward she gave it. She vowed that if Allah saved her she would slaughter it. There is no fulfillment of a vow in disobedience, nor in what the son of Adam does not own." The nephew of ʿUyaynah came with a she-camel belonging to the Prophet ﷺ and gave it to him as a gift. The Prophet ﷺ accepted it and ordered for him three ounces of silver, but he began to show displeasure. The Prophet ﷺ said: "A man gives me a she-camel from my own camels as a gift, and I recognize it as I recognize some of my own family, then I reward him for it, and he keeps showing displeasure with me. I had resolved not to accept a gift except from a Qurayshī, an Anṣārī, a Thaqafī, or a Dawsī."
