Translation
✧ The Detachment of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAtīk Against Abū Rāfiʿ Sallām b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq al-Naḍrī at Khaybar: It is said: in a fortress of his in the land of the Ḥijāz, in the month of Ramaḍān of the year six of the Hijrah of the Messenger of God ﷺ. It was said: in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, and it was said: the killing of Abū Rāfiʿ was in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year four of the Hijrah, and God knows best. In the Ṣaḥīḥ from al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib ؓ. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the affair of the Trench and the matter of Banū Qurayẓah were concluded, Sallām b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq—he is Abū Rāfiʿ—was among those who gathered the confederates against the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Aws had killed Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf before Uḥud for his enmity to the Messenger of God ﷺ and his incitement against him. The Khazraj asked permission of the Messenger of God ﷺ to kill Sallām b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq, who was at Khaybar, and he gave them permission. Among the things God did for His Messenger ﷺ was that these two tribes of the Anṣār, the Aws and the Khazraj, vied with one another in serving the Messenger of God ﷺ like two stallions competing. The Aws would not do anything of service to the Messenger of God ﷺ without the Khazraj saying: 'By God, they shall not go away with this as a virtue over us in the sight of the Messenger of God ﷺ and in Islam.' They would not stop until they did something similar. When the Khazraj did something, the Aws said the like. When the Aws had struck Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf for his enmity to the Messenger of God ﷺ, the Khazraj said: 'By God, they shall never go away with it as a virtue over us'—they ؓ used to compete in what draws near to God Most High and His Messenger ﷺ—and they consulted among themselves about a man who was hostile to the Messenger of God ﷺ like Ibn al-Ashraf. They mentioned Ibn Abī al-Ḥuqayq, who was at Khaybar or in the land of the Ḥijāz. Ibn Saʿd said: 'They said: Abū Rāfiʿ b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq had stirred up Ghatafān and the polytheists of the Arabs around him, and had given them a great reward for warring against the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Khazraj asked permission of the Messenger of God ﷺ to kill him, and he gave them permission.'
