The Detachment of 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik Against Abu Rafi' Sallam b. Abi al-Huqayq al-Nadri

✧ Then five men from the Khazraj, of Banu Salimah, went out to him: 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik, Mas'ud b. Sinan, 'Abd Allah b. Unays al-Juhani, the confederate of the Ansar, Abu Qatadah al-Harith b. Rib'i, and Khuza'i b. Aswad. According to Muhammad b. 'Umar and Muhammad b. Sa'd, it was Aswad b. Khuza'i, a confederate of theirs from Aslam. Al-Bara' b. 'Azib ؓ added—as in the Sahih—'Abd Allah b. 'Utbah—with a damma on the unpointed 'ayn and a sukun on the point-letter ta'—so they would be six. Musa b. 'Uqbah and al-Suhayli added As'ad b. Haram—with the letter ra'—so they would be seven. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik as their commander and forbade them from killing any child or woman. They set out until, when they arrived at Khaybar, they came to the house of Ibn Abi al-Huqayq at night. In the Sahih, from the hadith of al-Bara' b. 'Azib ؓ: "Abu Rafi' used to harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and aid against him, and he was in a fortress of his in the land of the Hijaz. When they drew near to it, after the sun had set and the people had gone in with their herds, 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik said to his companions: 'Stay where you are, for I will go and ingratiate myself with the gatekeeper, perhaps I can enter.' So he advanced until he drew near the gate." Ibn 'Atik said: I contrived to enter the fortress, but they missed a donkey of theirs, so they went out with a torch seeking it. I feared that I would be recognized, so I covered my head and my leg, veiled myself, and sat as if I were relieving myself. Then the keeper of the gate called out, and I entered, then hid. In another wording: I hid in a donkey's stable, and I saw where the keeper of the gate placed the key of the fortress in a small window. In another narration: When the people entered, he locked the gate and then hung the locks on a peg. Abu Rafi' used to hold evening conversation with him, and he was in an upper room of his. They supped with him and talked until an hour of the night passed, then they returned to their houses. In another narration: When the people of his evening talk had gone from him and the sounds had quieted, and I heard no movement, I came out and went to the keys, opened the gate of the fortress, and said: If the people become aware of me, I will leave at leisure. Then I went to the doors of their houses and locked them from outside. Then I climbed up to Abu Rafi', and every time I opened a door, I locked it behind me from inside. I said: If the people become aware of me, they will not reach me until I kill him. I came to him and found him in a dark room; his lamp had been extinguished, and he was in the midst of his family, and I did not know where he was in the room. I said: 'O Abu Rafi'.' He said: 'Who is this?' So I went toward the sound—in another wording: I turned toward the sound—and struck him a blow with the sword while I was bewildered—or he said: dazed—but it availed nothing. He cried out, so I went out of the room, and after a short while I came back and said, changing my voice: 'What is wrong with you, O Abu Rafi'?' He said: 'Are you not astonished? Woe to your mother! A man entered upon me and struck me with a sword.' Ibn 'Atik said: I went at him again and struck him another blow, but it availed nothing. He cried out and his family arose. Then I came back, changing my voice like one coming to help, and he was lying on his back. I placed the point of the sword in his belly and bore down upon it until I heard the sound of bone, and I knew that I had killed him. Then I went out, dazed, and began opening the doors one by one until I came to a flight of steps of his—in another wording: until I came to the ladder, intending to descend. I placed my foot, thinking that I had reached the ground, and I fell in a moonlit night, and my shin was broken—in another narration: my foot was dislocated—so I bound it with a turban and then came to my companions limping, and I said: 'Flee, for Allah has killed Abu Rafi'.' In another narration: I said to them: 'Go and give good tidings to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for I will not leave until I hear the wailing woman.' So I sat at the gate until the cock crowed. In another wording: When it was near dawn, the wailing woman mounted the wall and said: 'I announce the death of Abu Rafi', the merchant of the people of the Hijaz.' So I rose and walked, with no ailment in me, and I caught up with my companions before they reached the Prophet ﷺ and gave him the good tidings. In another narration: I told him, and he said to me: 'Stretch out your leg.' So I stretched it out. I stretched out my leg, and he wiped it, and it was as if I had never complained of it at all. This is what al-Bukhari mentioned in the Sahih from the hadith of al-Bara' b. 'Azib, and he stated clearly that 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik alone killed him. I say: It is possible that when 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik fell from that flight of steps, his foot was dislocated, his shin was broken, and his leg and hand were bruised. When he bound it, his pain subsided because of the extraordinary matter he was engaged in, and when he wanted to walk, he was aided in that because of the useful struggle he was undertaking. Then he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his soul became at rest, and the pain in his leg flared up. When he stretched out his leg and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped it, the past harm in it departed and no pain remained to be feared in the future. Ibn 'Uqbah, Ibn Ishaq, Muhammad b. 'Umar, Ibn Sa'd, and others mentioned the opposite of this; I have interwoven the accounts of some of them with others. They said: 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik and his companions came to Khaybar at night when its people were asleep, and they came to the house of Ibn Abi al-Huqayq. They did not leave any house in the dwelling without locking it upon its people—and he was in an upper room of his, to which they climbed—until they stood at his door and sought permission to enter. Ibn Sa'd said: They put 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik forward because he spoke the Jewish dialect—his mother was a Jewess who had nursed him at Khaybar. His wife came out to them and said: 'Who are you?' They said: 'People from the Arabs seeking provisions.' In another wording: 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik said in the Jewish dialect: 'I have come to Abu Rafi' with a gift.' So she opened for them and said: 'There is your companion; enter upon him.' He said: When we entered, we locked the room upon us and upon her, fearing that there might be a struggle before him that would prevent us from reaching him. She said: His wife cried out and alerted people to us. The wording of Ibn Sa'd: "When she saw the weapons she wanted to cry out, so they pointed the sword at her and she fell silent." We rushed at him while he was on his bed with our swords, and by Allah, nothing pointed to his location in the darkness of the night except his whiteness, as if he were a cast-off Coptic cloth. He said: When his wife cried out against us, a man among us would raise his sword over her, then remember the prohibition of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and so withhold his hand. Had it not been for that, we would have finished her off. He said: When we struck him with our swords, 'Abd Allah b. Unays threw himself upon him with his sword in his belly until he pierced him through, while he was saying: 'Enough for me! Enough for me!'—that is, 'It suffices me! It suffices me!' He said: We went out, and 'Abd Allah b. 'Atik was a man of weak sight, so he fell from the flight of steps and his hand was severely bruised—and it is said his leg, according to Ibn Hisham—and we carried him until we brought him to a water channel of their springs and entered it. His wife cried out, and the people of the dwelling called out to one another after his killing, and they lit fires and ran in every direction seeking us. According to Ibn Sa'd: "Al-Harith, the father of Zaynab the Jewess who poisoned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, went out in the tracks of the Companions with three thousand men seeking them with torches, but they did not see them and returned. The group remained in their place for two days until the search subsided. Then they went out, heading toward Madinah." When the Jews despaired, they returned to their companion and gathered around him while he was breathing his last among them. 'Abd Allah b. Unays said: We said: 'How can we know that the enemy of Allah has died?' A man among us said—Muhammad b. 'Umar said: it was al-Aswad b. Khuza'i—'I will go and look for you.' He said: So he went until he entered among the people. He said: I found his wife and the men of the Jews around him, and in her hand was a lamp, looking at his face and talking to them, saying: 'By Allah, I heard the voice of Ibn 'Atik, then I told myself I was mistaken and thought: How could Ibn 'Atik be in this land?' Then she turned to him, looking at his face and speaking to them, then she said: 'By the God of the Jews, he has died.' I heard no word that was sweeter to my soul than that. Then he came to us and told us the news, so we carried our companion and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ— Ibn 'Uqbah and Muhammad b. 'Umar added: while he was on the pulpit—and he said: 'May the faces prosper.' They said: 'May your face prosper, O Messenger of Allah.' We informed him of the killing of the enemy of Allah, and we disputed before him over his killing, each of us claiming it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Bring me your swords.' We brought them to him, and he looked at the sword of 'Abd Allah b. Unays and said: 'This one killed him; I see in it the trace of food.'
