The Expedition of Banu Qurayzah in the Year Five
Translation
✧ [The affair of ʿAṭiyyah and Rifāʿah ] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered the killing of every one of them who had reached puberty. Ibn Isḥāq said: Shuʿbah b. al-Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from ʿAṭiyyah al-Quraẓī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered that every one of Banū Qurayẓah who had reached puberty be killed. I was a boy, and they found that I had not reached puberty, so they let me go. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated from Aslam al-Anṣārī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put me in charge of the captives of Qurayẓah. I would look at the private part of a boy; if I saw that he had grown pubic hair, I struck his neck, and if I did not see it, I placed him among the spoils of the Muslims. Rifāʿah b. Samawʾal al-Quraẓī was a man who had reached maturity. He sought refuge with Salmā bt. Qays, Umm al-Mundhir, sister of Salīṭ b. Qays. She was one of the maternal aunts of the Prophet ﷺ and had prayed toward the two qiblahs with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and pledged allegiance to him in the pledge of the women. She said: "O Prophet of Allah, may my father and mother be your ransom, grant me Rifāʿah, for he claims that he will pray and eat camel meat." So he granted him to her, and she spared him, and he later became Muslim. The growth of coarse hair around the private part is an indication of puberty. The scholars who hold that the growth of coarse hair around the private part is an indication of puberty have used this as evidence. Rather, it is puberty according to the more correct of the two opinions of al-Shāfiʿī. Among the scholars are those who differentiate between the boys of the People of the Covenant, so that it is puberty in their case but not in the case of others, because the Muslim may be harmed by that intent.
