The Expedition of Banu Qurayzah in the Year Five
Translation
✧ And he did not kill any of their women except one woman from Banu al-Nadir, called Nubatah, who was married to a man from Banu Qurayzah called al-Hakam. He loved her and she loved him. When the siege became severe upon them, she wept to him and said, 'You will surely part from me.' He said: 'By the Torah, do you not see? You are a woman. Lower this millstone upon them, for we have not killed any of them yet, and you are a woman. If Muhammad prevails over us, he will not kill women.' He only disliked that she be taken captive, so he preferred that she be killed. She was in the fortress of al-Zubayr b. Bata, and she lowered a millstone from above the fortress. The Muslims would sometimes sit beneath the fortress seeking shade in its shadow. She pushed the millstone over, and when the people saw it, they scattered; it struck Khallad b. Suwayd and crushed his head. The Muslims warned the people of the fortress. On the day when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that they be killed, she entered upon ʿAʾishah ؓ and began laughing heartily, back and forth, saying: 'The nobles of Banu Qurayzah are being killed.' Then she heard the voice of a caller: 'O Nubatah!' She said, 'By Allah, I am the one being called.' ʿAʾishah said, 'Why?' She said, 'My husband killed me.' She was a girl of sweet speech. ʿAʾishah said: 'How did your husband kill you?' She said, 'In the fortress of al-Zubayr b. Bata, he ordered me and I lowered a millstone upon the companions of Muhammad, and it crushed the head of a man among them, so he died. I am to be killed for him.' She was taken away, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered her to be killed, in retribution for Khallad b. Suwayd. ʿAʾishah would say: 'I will not forget the sweetness of Nubatah's breath and her frequent laughter, though she knew she would be killed.'
