The Expedition of Banu Qurayzah in the Year Five
Translation
✧ The scholars of the military expeditions said: The Messenger of God ﷺ exerted himself in besieging them. When the siege became severe upon them, they sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ on Saturday night: 'Send to us Abū Lubābah b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir so that we may consult him about our affair.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ sent him to them. When they saw him, the men rose to him, and the women and children rushed toward him, weeping in his face. He felt compassion for them. Kaʿb b. Asad said: 'O Abū Lubābah, we have chosen you over others. Muḥammad has refused anything except that we submit to his judgment. Do you think we should submit to his judgment?' He said: 'Yes,' and he gestured with his hand to his throat, meaning that it is slaughter. Abū Lubābah said: 'By God, my feet did not leave their place until I knew that I had betrayed God and His Messenger.' He regretted it and said 'innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn.' He descended, and indeed my beard was wet with tears, while the people were waiting for my return to them. So I took another route from behind the fortress until I came to the mosque, and I did not come to the Messenger of God ﷺ. I bound myself, and my binding was to the perfumed pillar that is called the Pillar of Repentance. I said: 'I will not leave my place until I die or God relents toward me for what I did.' I made a covenant with God Almighty that I would never tread the land of Banū Qurayẓah ever, and that I would never be seen in a land where I betrayed God Almighty and His Messenger ﷺ ever. What was revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Abū Lubābah Ibn Hishām said: God Almighty revealed concerning Abū Lubābah, according to what Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah said, from Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Qatādah: 'O you who believe, do not betray God and the Messenger, and do not betray your trusts while you know.'
