The Expedition of Dumat al-Jandal
غَزْوَةِ دُومَةِ الْجَنْدَلِ وَهِي بِضَمِّ الدَّالِ، وَأَمَّا دَوْمَةُ بِالْفَتْحِ فَمَكَانٌ آخَرُ. وهي بَلَدٌ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ دِمَشْقَ خَمْسُ لَيَالٍ. أَدْنَى الشَّامِ: أَقْرَبُهَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ. وكانت هذه الغزوة فِي شَهْرِ رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ سَنَةَ خَمْسٍ وقَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إلَى الْمَدِينَةِ، فَأَقَامَ مِنْ مَقْدَمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِهَا أَشْهُرًا حَتَّى مَضَى ذُو الْحِجَّةِ وَوَلِيَ تِلْكَ الْحِجَّةَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ وَهِيَ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعٍ ثُمَّ غَزَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ دَوْمَةَ الْجَنْدَلِ وسببها أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ بِدَوْمَةِ الْجَنْدَلِ جَمْعًا كَثِيرًا، وَأَنَّهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ مَنْ مَرَّ بِهِمْ، وَكَانَ بَيْنَ دَوْمَةَ الْجَنْدَلِ وَبَيْنَ الْمَدِينَةِ مَسِيرَةُ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةً، أَوْ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ، وَقِيلَ للنبي ﷺ: إِنَّهَا طَرَفٌ مِنْ أَفْوَاهِ الشَّامِ، فَلَوْ دَنَوْتَ لَهَا لَكَانَ ذَلِكَ مِمَّا يُفْزِعُ قَيْصَرَ.
Translation
✧ The Expedition of Dūmat al-Jandal It is with ḍammah on the dāl; as for Dawmah with fatḥah, it is another place. It is a town between which and Damascus there are five nights. The nearest part of Syria: the closest of it to Madinah. This expedition was in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year five. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ returned to Madinah, and he stayed there from his arrival for months until Dhū al-Ḥijjah had passed, and the polytheists took charge of that pilgrimage, which was in the year four. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ raided Dūmat al-Jandal. The reason was that the Messenger of God ﷺ had heard that at Dūmat al-Jandal there was a large gathering, and that they wronged whoever passed by them. Between Dūmat al-Jandal and Madinah was a journey of fifteen nights or sixteen. It was said to the Prophet ﷺ: It is an outpost of the approaches to Syria, so if you were to approach it, that would be something to terrify Caesar.
