✧ Mention of his command ﷺ to cut down the palm trees The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that the palm trees of Banū al-Naḍīr be cut down, and he appointed over their cutting Abū Laylā al-Māzinī and ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām. Abū Laylā used to cut the ʿajwah, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām used to cut the lawn. It was said to the two of them concerning that, so Abū Laylā said: "The ʿajwah was more burning for them," and ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām said: "I knew that Allah would give him their wealth as spoils, and the ʿajwah was better for them. When I cut the ʿajwah, the women tore their collars and struck their cheeks and called out for woe." Then Sallām b. Mishkam began to say: "O Ḥuyayy, the ʿadhq [is better] than the ʿajwah; it is planted and does not yield for thirty years, and it is cut down!" So Ḥuyayy sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ["O Muḥammad, indeed you] used to forbid corruption, so why do you cut down the palm trees?" And some of the Muslims felt uneasy in themselves at their words and feared that it might be corruption. Some of them said: "Do not cut," and others said: "Rather, we will cut it to enrage them thereby." And Ḥuyayy sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "We will give you what you asked and depart from your land." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I will not accept it today. Rather, depart from it, and you shall have what the camels carry except the ḥalqah (armor)." Sallām b. Mishkam said: "Accept, woe to you, before you accept something worse than that." Ḥuyayy said: "What could be worse than this?" Sallām b. Mishkam said: "The offspring will be taken captive and the fighting men will be killed along with the wealth, and the wealth is easier upon us." Ḥuyayy refused to accept for a day or two. When Yāmīn b. ʿUmayr and Abū Saʿd b. Wahb saw that, one of them said to his companion: "By Allah, you know that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so what are we waiting for? Let us become Muslims and secure safety for our blood and our wealth." So they came down at night and became Muslims and safeguarded their wealth and their blood. Then the Jews came down on the condition that they would have what the camels carried except the ḥalqah. Yāmīn gave a man from Qays ten dinars, and it is said five awsuq of dates, until ʿAmr b. Jaḥḥāsh was killed by treachery, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rejoiced at his killing. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ besieged them. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar and Ibn Saʿd and al-Balādhurī and Abū Maʿshar and Ibn Ḥibbān said: fifteen days. Ibn Isḥāq and Abū ʿAmr said: six nights. Sulaymān al-Taymī said: close to twenty nights. Ibn al-Kulāʿ said: twenty-three nights. And from ʿĀʾishah: twenty-five until he expelled them. And Muḥammad b. Maslamah ؓ took charge of their expulsion. They said: "We have debts owed to us by people with fixed terms." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Hasten and reduce." Abū Rāfiʿ Sallām b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq had a debt of one hundred and twenty dinars due in a year owed by Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr, so he made a settlement with him on receiving his principal of eighty dinars and forgave the surplus. During their siege they used to demolish their houses from the side nearest to them, and the Muslims used to demolish their houses from the side nearest to them and burn them, until the peace agreement was concluded.
