The Expulsion of Banu al-Nadir in the Year Four
Translation
✧ Mention of the departure of Banū al-Naḍīr from their land When they departed, they protected the women and children, and what the camels could carry of goods. A man would demolish his house from the lintel of its door, and they displayed great fortitude. They went out by way of Balḥārith b. al-Khazraj, then by al-Jabaliyya, then by the bridge, until they passed by the prayer place, then they cut through the market of Madinah, with the women in litters, wearing brocade and silk, green and red velvet cloaks of khazz, gold and silver jewelry, and saffron-dyed garments. Abū Rāfiʿ Sallām b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq called out, raising the skin of a camel and said: “This is part of what we prepare for the lowering of the earth and its raising. If we have left the palm trees behind, we are heading for palm trees in Khaybar.” They passed by with tambourines, flutes, and singing slave-girls playing behind them as a show of fortitude. The people lined up for them, and they passed in file after file, having loaded their belongings on six hundred camels. The hypocrites grieved sorely at their departure. Most of them alighted at Khaybar, among them Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab, Sallām b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq, and Kināna b. Ṣuwayrāʾ. Its people submitted to them, while a group of them went to Syria.
