The Detachment of al-Mundhir b. 'Amr to Bi'r Ma'unah (the Detachment of the Qur'an Reciters)
Translation
✧ Al-Shaykhān, Imām Aḥmad, and al-Bayhaqī narrated from Anas, and al-Bayhaqī from Ibn Masʿūd ؓ, and al-Bukhārī from ʿUrwah, that some people came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: “Send with us men to teach us the Qurʾān and the Sunnah.” So he sent to them seventy men from the Anṣār called the Qurrāʾ (reciters). But they waylaid them and killed them before they reached the place. They said: “O Allah, convey from us to our Prophet—and in another wording: to our brothers—that we have met You and we are pleased with You and You are pleased with us.” Then Jibrīl informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of that, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, praised Allah and extolled Him, and said: “Your brothers have met the polytheists and they killed them, so none of them remains. Indeed they said: ‘Our Lord, convey to our people that we are pleased and He is pleased with us.’ And I am their messenger to you: they are pleased and He is pleased with them.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then supplicated for forty mornings against Riʿl, Dhakwān, Banū Liḥyān, and Banū ʿUṣayyah, those who disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. And in a narration from Anas in the Ṣaḥīḥ: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated against them for a month in the dawn prayer after the recitation—and in another narration after the bowing—and that was after the qunūt, and we had not been performing qunūt.” And in the narration of Imām Aḥmad, Anas ؓ said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieve over anything as he grieved over them. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raise his hands and supplicate against them whenever he prayed the dawn prayer. Then after that, Abū Ṭalḥah said: ‘Would you like the killer of Ḥarām?’ I said: ‘What is with him? May Allah Almighty do to him such-and-such.’ He said: ‘Gently, for he has accepted Islam.’ And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning the people of Biʾr Maʿūnah a Qurʾān: ‘Convey to our people on our behalf that we have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and we are pleased with Him.’ Then it was abrogated.
