The Detachment of al-Mundhir b. 'Amr to Bi'r Ma'unah (the Detachment of the Qur'an Reciters)

Translation

✧ Al-Bukhārī narrated from the route of Hishām b. ʿUrwah who said: My father informed me, saying: “When those who were killed at Biʾr Maʿūnah were killed and ʿAmr b. Umayyah was taken captive, ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl said to ʿAmr: ‘Who is this?’ and he pointed to a slain man. He said: ‘This is ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah!’ He said: ‘I saw him after he was killed raised up to the sky, until I looked at the sky between him and the earth, then he was placed down.’” And Muḥammad b. ʿUmar narrated from Abū al-Aswad from ʿUrwah that ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl said to ʿAmr b. Umayyah: “Do you recognize your companions?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “So he went around among the slain and began asking him about their lineages. Then he said: ‘Do you miss anyone of them?’ He said: ‘I miss a client of Abū Bakr called ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah.’ He said: ‘How was he among you?’ He said: ‘I said: He was one of the best of us, and one of the first companions of our Prophet.’ He said: ‘Shall I tell you his news?’ And he pointed to a man and said: ‘This one thrust him with his spear, then pulled out his spear and the man went up high into the sky until I could not see him.’ The one who thrust him was a man of Banū Kilāb called Jabbār b. Sulmā, and he later embraced Islam. Abū ʿUmar mentioned this in al-Istīʿāb. In the biography of ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah, he mentioned that ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl killed him, while also mentioning in the biography of Jabbār that he was the one who killed Ibn Fuhayrah. And Allah knows best. And al-Bayhaqī narrated from him that he said: “When I thrust him, he said: ‘I have won, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah.’ I said in my heart: ‘What is the meaning of his saying “I have won”? Did I not kill him?’ He said: ‘So I went to al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Sufyān al-Kilābī and told him what had happened and asked him about his saying “I have won.” He said: “With Paradise.” I said: “Then he won, by the life of Allah.”’ He said: ‘He offered Islam to me and I embraced Islam. What called me to Islam was what I saw of the killing of ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah—his being raised up high to the sky.’ And al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Sufyān wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informing him of my Islam and of what I saw of the killing of ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The angels concealed his body, and he was brought down to ʿIlliyyīn.” Al-Bayhaqī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “It is possible that he was raised up, then placed down, then lost after that, so as to reconcile with the previous narration of al-Bukhārī from ʿUrwah, for in it is ‘then he was placed down.’ We have narrated it in the Maghāzī of Mūsā b. ʿUqbah in this story. He said: ʿUrwah said: ‘The body of ʿĀmir was not found; they narrate that the angels concealed it.’” Then al-Bayhaqī narrated it from ʿĀʾishah as a connected report with the wording: “I saw him after he was killed raised up to the sky until I looked at the sky between him and the earth,” and he did not mention in it “then he was placed down.” Al-Shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “The routes have become strong and numerous for his being concealed in the sky.”
