The Detachment of al-Mundhir b. 'Amr to Bi'r Ma'unah (the Detachment of the Qur'an Reciters)
Translation
✧ And in the pasturing of the people were ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī and a man from the Anṣār from Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. Ibn Isḥāq said: al-Mundhir b. Muḥammad b. ʿUqbah. And Ibn ʿUmar said: Al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah, and ʿAmr b. Umayyah, were at the pasturing place, and they had become suspicious of the birds' hovering over their camp [or near their camp], so they kept saying: 'By Allah, our companions have been killed.' Then they ascended a rise of ground, and behold, their companions were slain, and the horses were standing. Al-Mundhir b. Muḥammad b. ʿUqbah or al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah said [to ʿAmr b. Umayyah]: 'What do you see?' He said: 'I think we should catch up with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and inform him of the news.' The other said: 'I would not hold back from a place where al-Mundhir was killed; men shall not tell me about it.' So they advanced and met the people, and al-Ḥārith fought them until he killed two of them, then they seized him and took him captive, and they also took ʿAmr b. Umayyah captive. They said to al-Ḥārith: 'What would you like us to do with you? For we do not wish to kill you.' He said: 'Take me to the place where al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr and Ḥarām b. Milḥān fell, then your protection is released from me.' They said: 'We will do so.' They took him there, then released him, and he fought them and killed two of them, then he was killed. And they did not kill him until they directed spears at him and strung him upon them. ʿAmr b. Umayyah informed them, while he was a captive in their hands, that he was from Muḍar and had not fought. So ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl said: 'My mother had a vow to free a slave; you are free on her behalf.' And he cut off his forelock.
