The Detachment of al-Mundhir b. 'Amr to Bi'r Ma'unah (the Detachment of the Qur'an Reciters)
وَرَجَعَ عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِالْقَرْقَرَةِ مِنْ صَدْرِ قَنَاةٍ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلَانِ مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ بَنِي كِلَابٍ أَوْ مِنْ بَنِي سَلِمَةَ وَذَكَرَ أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْمَدَنِيُّ أَنَّهُمَا مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ. حَتَّى نَزَلَا مَعَهُ فِي ظِلٍّ هُوَ فِيهِ. وَكَانَ مَعَ الْعَامِرِيَّيْنِ عَقْدٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَجِوَارٌ، وَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِهِ عَمْرٌو. فَسَأَلَهُمَا حِينَ نَزَلَا: مِمَّنْ أَنْتُمَا ؟ فَقَالَا: مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرٍ. فَأَمْهَلَهُمَا حَتَّى إِذَا نَامَا عَدَا عَلَيْهِمَا فَقَتَلَهُمَا، وَهُوَ يَرَى أَنَّهُ قَدْ أَصَابَ بِهِمَا ثُؤْرَةً مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرٍ فِيمَا أَصَابُوا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ. فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَمْرُو بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرَهُ الْخَبَرَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «لَقَدْ قَتَلْتَ قَتِيلَيْنِ لَأَدِيَنَّهُمَا» ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «هَذَا عَمَلُ أَبِي بَرَاءٍ، قَدْ كُنْتُ لِهَذَا كَارِهًا مُتَخَوِّفًا». فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ أَبَا بَرَاءٍ، فَشَقَّ عَلَيْهِ إِخْفَارُ عَامِرِ بْنِ الطُّفَيْلِ إِيَّاهُ وَمَا أَصَابَ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِسَبَبِهِ وَجِوَارِهِ.
Translation
✧ And ʿAmr b. Umayyah returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Until when he was at al-Qarqarah, at the upper part of Qanāh, two men of Banū ʿĀmir — then of Banū Kilāb or of Banū Salamah — approached; and Abū ʿAmr al-Madanī mentioned that they were from Banū Sulaym. They came down with him in a shade where he was. The two ʿĀmirīs had with them a covenant from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and protection, but ʿAmr did not know of it. When they came down, he asked them: "From whom are you two?" They said: "From Banū ʿĀmir." He gave them respite until, when they slept, he attacked them and killed them, thinking that by them he had attained retaliation against Banū ʿĀmir for what they had inflicted on the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When ʿAmr b. Umayyah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of the news, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You have surely killed two slain men; I shall pay their blood-money." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is the work of Abū Barāʾ. I was averse to this and fearful of it." That reached Abū Barāʾ, and the violation by ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl of his protection weighed heavily upon him, and what befell the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ because of him and his protection.
