The Detachment of al-Mundhir b. 'Amr to Bi'r Ma'unah (the Detachment of the Qur'an Reciters)

Translation

✧ When they alighted at it—Bi'r Ma'unah—they sent Ḥarām b. Milḥān with the letter of the Prophet ﷺ to ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl. When he came to him, he did not look at the letter and pounced upon Ḥarām and killed him. In the Ṣaḥīḥ on the authority of Anas: "My uncle Ḥarām b. Milḥān went ahead of them, along with a lame man." Ibn Hishām said: His name was Kaʿb b. Zayd. Al-Bayhaqī added: And another man from Banū Fulān. My uncle Ḥarām b. Milḥān said to them: "When I go before you, stay close to me; if they grant me safe conduct while I convey to them the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then come forward, but if they kill me, then rejoin your companions." He went ahead, and they granted him safe conduct. While he was relating to them the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they gestured to one of their men, who came from behind and stabbed him, running him through. He said: "Allāhu akbar! I have won, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah!" Then he said: "With the blood, like this," and sprinkled it on his face. Kaʿb b. Zayd escaped because he was on a mountain. ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl called upon Banū ʿĀmir for help against them, but they refused to answer his call, saying: "We will not violate the protection of Abū Barāʾ! He has made for them a pact and protection." When Banū ʿĀmir refused to go out with ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl, he called for help against them from tribes of Banū Sulaym: Ghuṣayyah, Riʿl, Dhakwān, and Ziʿb. They went out with him and put him in command over them. ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl said: "I swear by Allah, this one did not come alone." So they followed his tracks until they found the people. When they deemed their companion slow, they came following their tracks, and the enemy met them. Al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr was with them, and they surrounded them at their camps. When the Muslims saw them, they took their swords and fought them until they were killed to the last man. In the narration of Qatādah from Anas: When they were at Bi'r Maʿūnah, they killed them and betrayed them. Ibn Isḥāq said: "Except Kaʿb b. Zayd, brother of Banū Dīnār b. al-Najjār; they left him while he still had a breath of life, and he was retrieved from among the slain and lived until he was killed as a martyr on the day of the Trench." Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: Al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr remained, and they said to him: "If you wish, we will grant you safe conduct." He said: "I will not give my hand, nor will I accept safe conduct from you, until I come to the place where Ḥarām was killed [then your protection is released from me, so they granted him safe conduct until he came to the place where Ḥarām fell], then they released themselves to him from their protection. Then he fought them until he was killed. That is the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "He hastened to die."
