Translation

✧ [The killing of Marthad, Ibn al-Bukayr, and ʿĀṣim] As for Marthad b. Abī Marthad, Khālid b. al-Bukayr, and ʿĀṣim b. Thābit, they said: By God, we will never accept from a polytheist a covenant or a pact, ever. ʿĀṣim b. Thābit said: What is my ailment, when I am tough and skilled with arrows, and the bow has a strong string; Broad-headed arrows slip from its face. Death is true, and life is vain; Everything God has decreed descends Upon a man, and man returns to Him. If I do not fight you, may my mother be bereft. Ibn Hishām said: “hābil” means “one who has lost a child.” ʿĀṣim b. Thābit also said: Abū Sulaymān, and the feathering of the miquʿad, and a stray arrow like a blazing fire; When the swift steeds spread forth, I do not tremble; And a shield of tough hide from a hairless bull, And a believer in what was given to Muḥammad. ʿĀṣim b. Thābit also said: Abū Sulaymān is like me in archery; My people were a noble company. ʿĀṣim b. Thābit was given the kunyah Abū Sulaymān. Then he fought the people until he was killed, and his two companions were killed. ʿĀṣim had said: “As for me, I will not come down under the protection of an unbeliever. O God, I protect Your religion today, so protect my flesh. O God, inform Your Messenger about us.” Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd, as narrated by Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, said: “God, may He be exalted, answered ʿĀṣim, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was informed of his news and the news of his companions on the day they were struck.”
