The Detachment of al-Raji'

Translation

✧ They went out—the group whom the Messenger of God ﷺ sent—with the people—ʿAḍal and al-Qārah—until when they were at al-Haddah—and in one narration at al-Hadʾah, between ʿUsfān and Makkah. In another narration, until when they were at al-Rajīʿ, a watering place of Hudhayl in the direction of the Ḥijāz, at the upper parts of al-Hadʾah. Abū Hurayrah, ʿUrwah, and Ibn ʿUqbah said: They betrayed them and stirred up against them, and in one wording: they raised a cry for help against them from nearly a hundred archers, and in a narration in the Ṣaḥīḥ, in the book of Jihād: “they stirred up against them nearly two hundred men.” The reconciliation is clear: that the other hundred were not archers. Abū Maʿshar mentioned in his Maghāzī that the Companions ؓ alighted at al-Rajīʿ at dawn, and they ate ʿajwah dates, and their pits fell to the ground. They used to travel by night and hide by day. A woman of Hudhayl came tending sheep and saw the pits, and she found their smallness strange, and said: “This is the date of Yathrib.” She cried out among her people: “You have been raided.” They followed their tracks until they reached a stopping place and found in it date pits that they had taken as provision from al-Madīnah. They came in pursuit of them and found that they had taken shelter in the mountain. End quote. The people were startled only by men with swords in their hands, who had surrounded them. When ʿĀṣim and his companions sensed them, they took refuge on a hillock—and in one wording: a hard elevated ground—in a valley called Ghurrān. The people came and surrounded them, and said: “You have a covenant and a pact that if you come down to us, we will not kill any man from you. By God, we do not want to kill you; we only want to get something for you from the people of Makkah.”
