The Detachment of al-Raji'
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq and others said: “When ʿĀṣim was killed, Hudhayl wanted to take his head to sell it to Sulāfah bt. Saʿd [b. Shuhayd], who later accepted Islam. She had vowed, when her two sons Musāfiʿ and al-Julās, the two sons of Ṭalḥah b. Abī Ṭalḥah al-ʿAbdarī, were killed—ʿĀṣim having killed them on the day of Uḥud—that if she could get hold of ʿĀṣim’s head she would drink wine from his skull. She offered a hundred camels to anyone who brought it, but the hornets prevented it. In the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah in the Ṣaḥīḥ: ‘Quraysh sent for ʿĀṣim, to bring something of his body by which they might recognize him; ʿĀṣim had killed a great one of their great ones on the day of Badr.’ Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: ‘Perhaps he was ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ, for ʿĀṣim killed him in execution by the permission of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after they had departed from Badr. It was as if Quraysh had not learned of what had happened to Hudhayl in the hornets preventing them from taking ʿĀṣim’s head, so they sent someone to take it, or they knew of that and hoped the hornets had left it, enabling them to take it.’” End quote. Then Allah sent against him a swarm like a cloud of hornets flying in their faces and stinging them, protecting him from their messengers, so they could not obtain anything from him. End quote. When they were cut off from him, they said: “Leave him until evening, so they go away from him, then we may take him.” Then Allah, blessed and exalted, sent the valley, and it carried him away and took him off. ʿĀṣim ؓ had given Allah a covenant that no polytheist would touch him and he would not touch a polytheist, and Allah, mighty and glorious, fulfilled his oath, so they neither saw him nor obtained anything from him. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ used to say when news of him reached him: “Allah, blessed and exalted, protects the believing servant after his death just as He protects him in his life.”
