The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ Mention of the killing of ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mughīrah al-Makhzūmī Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh [b. al-Mughīrah al-Makhzūmī] came forward on a piebald horse, wearing full armor, intending to reach the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was heading toward the mountain pass, and he was shouting: 'I will not be saved if you are saved.' The Messenger of God ﷺ stopped, and ʿUthmān's horse stumbled with him into one of those pits, so he fell and the horse bolted away, and the Muslims seized it. Al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah walked toward him, and they clashed for a while with their swords. Then al-Ḥārith struck him on his leg, [the coat of mail being hitched up], so he knelt down, and he finished him off. On that day al-Ḥārith took his coat of mail and his helmet, and no one else was heard of as being despoiled that day besides him. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Praise be to God who has humiliated him.' ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh ؓ had taken him captive at Baṭn Nakhlah, and he ransomed himself from the Messenger of God ﷺ, returned to Makkah until he came forth, and God Almighty killed him at Uḥud. Then ʿUbayd b. Ḥājiz al-ʿĀmirī came rushing as if he were a beast of prey and struck al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah, wounding him on his shoulder. His companions carried him away, and Abū Dujānah leaped at ʿUbayd, exchanged blows with him for a while, then slaughtered him with the sword, and rejoined the Messenger of God ﷺ.
