The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [ The Messenger ﷺ's departure in pursuit of the enemy to intimidate them ] He said: When the morrow came — Sunday, sixteen nights having passed of Shawwāl — the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called among the people for pursuit of the enemy, and his muezzin announced that no one should go out with us except one who had been present with us yesterday. Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām spoke to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, my father had left me behind to look after seven sisters of mine, and he said: O my little son, it is not fitting for me or for you to leave these women with no man among them, and I am not one to prefer you over myself for jihad with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so remain behind for your sisters. So I remained behind for them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted him, and he went out with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out only to intimidate the enemy and to let them know that he had gone out in pursuit of them, so that they would think he had strength and that what had befallen them had not weakened them against their enemy. [ An example of the Muslims' self-sacrifice in aiding the Messenger ] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Khārija b. Zayd b. Thābit related to me, from Abū al-Sāʾib, the freedman of ʿĀʾisha bt. ʿUthmān, that a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, who had been present at Uḥud with the Messenger of Allah, said: I was present at Uḥud with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I and a brother of mine, and we returned wounded. When the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced the departure in pursuit of the enemy, I said to my brother, or he said to me: Shall a raid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ elude us? By Allah, we have no mount to ride, and none of us is anything but severely wounded. So we went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I was the lighter in wounds, so when he was overcome, I carried him for a stretch and he walked for a stretch, until we reached what the Muslims reached. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the morning prayer, he summoned the people and ordered Bilāl to call out: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to pursue your enemy, and none shall go out with us except one who witnessed the fighting yesterday. Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr said — while he had nine wounds and was about to treat them when he heard the call —: Hearing and obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and he did not pause over the treatment of his wound, and he went out. Forty wounded men went out from the Banū Salama, among them al-Ṭufayl b. al-Nuʿmān with thirteen wounds, Khirāsh b. al-Ṣimma with ten wounds, Kaʿb b. Mālik with a dozen or so wounds, and Quṭba b. ʿĀmir with nine wounds. The Muslims leapt to their weapons and did not pause over the treatment of their wounds. Ibn ʿUqba said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I will ride with you. He said: "No."
