The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ Mention of the killing of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh ؓ Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Aslamī related from his shaykhs, and Ibn Wahb from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ ؓ, that ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh said to him on the day of Uḥud: “Will you not come so that we may call upon God, exalted be He, in a corner?” So Saʿd called upon Him and said: “O Lord, when I meet the enemy tomorrow, cause me to meet a man of mighty prowess and mighty wrath; I shall fight him for Your sake and he shall fight me. Then grant me victory over him until I kill him and take his spoils.” ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh said ameen. Then he said: “O God, grant me a man of mighty prowess and mighty wrath; I shall fight him for Your sake and he shall fight me. Then let him kill me, then take me and cut off my nose and my ear. Then when I meet You, You will say: ‘O My servant, for what were your nose and ear cut off?’ And I shall say: ‘For You and for Your Messenger.’ Then God, exalted be He, will say: ‘You have spoken truly.’” Saʿd said: “By God, the supplication of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh was better than my supplication, and indeed I saw him at the end of the day while his ears and his nose were hung upon a thread.” Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The Messenger of God ﷺ took charge of his estate and purchased property for his son at Khaybar, and he was buried together with his maternal uncle Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib in one grave. Benefit: Ibn al-Qayyim said among the lessons derived: It is permissible for a man to supplicate that he be killed in the path of God, and to desire that, and this is not among the forbidden wishing for death, as ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh said.
