The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related from his shaykhs; they said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām — with the rāʾ — said: I saw in a dream before Uḥud Mubashshir b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir saying to me: “You are coming to us in a few days.” I said: “And where are you?” He said: “In Paradise, roaming in it as I wish.” I said: “Were you not killed on the day of Badr?” He said: “Yes, then I was brought to life.” He mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “This is martyrdom, O Abā Jābir.” And from Ibn al-Munkadir: I heard Jābir say: When my father was killed, I began to weep and to uncover the cloth from his face, and the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ began to forbid me, while the Prophet ﷺ did not forbid. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not weep for him — or do not weep over him — the angels kept shading him with their wings until he was lifted up.” From Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out from Madinah to the polytheists to fight them, and my father ʿAbd Allāh said to me: “O Jābir, it is no matter to you that you be among the onlookers of the people of Madinah until you learn what our affair comes to, for by Allah, were it not that I leave daughters after me, I would have loved that you be killed before my eyes.” He said: While I was among the onlookers, my paternal aunt came with my father and my maternal uncle, having balanced them on a camel, and she entered Madinah with them to bury them in our graves, when a man caught up calling: “Lo, the Prophet ﷺ commands you to return with the slain and bury them in their places of death where they were killed.” So we returned with them and buried them where they were killed. Then while I was in the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān, a man came to me and said: “O Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, by Allah, the workers of Muʿāwiyah have uncovered your father and part of him appeared.” So I went to him and found him just as I had buried him, unchanged except for what killing had not spared, or the slain one. He said: I heard Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at me and said: “Why do I see you distressed?” He said: I said: “O Messenger of Allah, my father has been killed and left debt and dependents.” He said: “Shall I not tell you? Allah has not spoken to anyone except from behind a veil, and He spoke to your father face to face, and said to him: ‘O My servant, ask Me and I will give you.’ He said: ‘I ask You to return me to the world so that I may be killed for You a second time.’ He said: ‘It has already been said by Me that they shall not be returned to it.’ He said: ‘O Lord, then convey to those behind me.’ So Allah sent down: And do not reckon those who were killed in the way of Allah as dead; rather they are alive with their Lord, provided for — the verse.
