The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [The killing of al-Yamān and Ibn Waqsh] Ibn Isḥāq said: The people had been routed away from the Messenger of God ﷺ until some of them reached al-Munaqqā, short of al-Aʿwaṣ. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me, from Maḥmūd b. Labīd, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to Uḥud, Ḥusayl b. Jābir—who is al-Yamān, the father of Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān—and Thābit b. Waqsh were raised up into the strongholds with the women and children. One of them, both being elderly men, said to his companion: What is wrong with you, what are you waiting for? By God, neither of us has any of his lifespan left except the watering interval of a donkey. We are but a skull today or tomorrow. Shall we not take up our swords and then join the Messenger of God ﷺ, in the hope that God may grant us martyrdom with the Messenger of God ﷺ? So they took up their swords and went out until they entered among the people, without anyone knowing of them. As for Thābit b. Waqsh, the polytheists killed him. As for Ḥusayl b. Jābir, the swords of the Muslims fell upon him repeatedly, and they killed him without recognizing him. Ḥudhayfah said: My father! They said: By God, we did not recognize him—and they spoke the truth. Ḥudhayfah said: May God forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. The Messenger of God ﷺ wished to pay his bloodwit, but Ḥudhayfah gave his bloodwit as charity to the Muslims, and that increased him in goodness in the sight of the Messenger of God ﷺ. In another narration: Ḥusayl, the father of Ḥudhayfah, went out with Ḥudhayfah intending to reach the Messenger of God ﷺ before the campaign of Badr. The polytheists met them and said: You two intend to join Muḥammad. They replied: We intend nothing but al-Madīnah. They made them swear by the covenant of God and His compact that they would not fight alongside Muḥammad. So they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him, and said: If you wish, we will fight with you. He said: Rather, we shall fulfill our pact with them and seek God's help against them. They both witnessed the expedition of Uḥud, and the swords of the Muslims fell upon Ḥusayl while they did not recognize him. Ḥudhayfah began to say: My father! My father! But they did not understand until he was killed. Ḥudhayfah gave his blood as charity to the Muslims.
