The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [The Affair of Anas b. al-Naḍr] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Rāfiʿ, brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, narrated to me, saying: Anas b. al-Naḍr, the paternal uncle of Anas b. Mālik, came to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh, among men of the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, who had thrown down their hands. He said, "What is keeping you seated?" They said, "The Messenger of God ﷺ has been killed." He said, "Then what will you do with life after him? Rise, and die as the Messenger of God ﷺ died." Then he faced the people and fought until he was killed. It was after him that Anas b. Mālik was named. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl narrated to me from Anas b. Mālik, who said: On that day we found seventy wounds on Anas b. al-Naḍr, and none recognized him except his sister, who recognized him by his fingertips. And from Anas: his paternal uncle had been absent from Badr, so he said: I was absent from the first fighting in which the Messenger of God ﷺ fought. If God lets me witness a battle alongside the Prophet ﷺ, God will surely see what I do. He met the day of Uḥud, and the people were routed. He said: O God, I excuse myself to You from what these have done—meaning the Muslims—and I dissociate myself to You from what the polytheists have brought. Then he advanced with his sword and met Saʿd b. Muʿādh. He said, "Where to, O Saʿd?" He said, "I find the scent of Paradise before Uḥud." He went on and was killed, and he was not recognized until his sister recognized him by a mole or by his fingertips. Upon him were eighty-some wounds, from stabbing, striking, and arrow shots. Benefit: Ibn al-Qayyim said among the lessons derived: It is permissible to plunge into the enemy, as Anas b. al-Naḍr and others did.
