Translation
✧ [ The affair of the woman of Banū Dīnār ] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Abī ʿAwn narrated to me, from Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad, from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ passed by a woman of Banū Dīnār whose husband, brother, and father had been struck down with the Messenger of God ﷺ at Uḥud. When they were announced dead to her, she said, “What has become of the Messenger of God ﷺ?” They said, “Good, O mother of so-and-so; he is, by God’s praise, as you love.” She said, “Show him to me so that I may look at him.” He said: So he was pointed out to her, and when she saw him she said, “Every affliction after you is jalāl,” meaning small. Ibn Hishām said: jalāl may be from the little and from the much, but here it is from the little. Imruʾ al-Qays said concerning the little jalāl: For the killing of Banū Asad their lord — nay, everything besides him is jalāl. Ibn Hishām said: As for the saying of the poet, who is al-Ḥārith b. Waʿla al-Jarmī, If I pardon, I will pardon a jalāl, and if I strike, I will weaken my bone. (it is from the much). Umm Saʿd b. Muʿādh ؓ reassures herself about the Prophet ﷺ Umm Saʿd b. Muʿādh, who was Kabsha bt. Rāfiʿ, came running toward the Messenger of God ﷺ while he had stopped on his horse, with Saʿd b. Muʿādh holding the reins of his horse. Saʿd said, “O Messenger of God! My mother!” He said, “Welcome to her.” She drew near until she looked closely at the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, “Now that I have seen you safe, the affliction has been singed away.” The Messenger of God ﷺ consoled her for her son ʿAmr b. Muʿādh, then said, “O Umm Saʿd, rejoice and give good tidings to their families: their slain have become companions together in Paradise, all of them, and they have been granted intercession for their families.” She said, “We are content, O Messenger of God, and who will weep over them after this?” Then she said, “O Messenger of God, pray for those left behind.” He said, “O God, remove the sorrow of their hearts, mend their affliction, and make good the succession for those left behind.”
