The Expedition of Uḥud

✧ [ ABŪ DUJĀNAH AND IBN ABĪ WAQQĀṢ DEFEND THE MESSENGER ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Dujānah shielded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his own body, arrows falling on his back while he was bent over him, until many arrows lodged in him. And Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ shot arrows in defense of the Messenger of Allah. Saʿd said: I saw him handing me arrows, saying: "Shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom," until he even handed me an arrow that had no arrowhead, and said: "Shoot with it." ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said: I never heard the Prophet ﷺ mention both his parents for anyone except for Saʿd b. Mālik, for I heard him say on the day of Uḥud: "O Saʿd, shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom." Saʿd said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handing me arrows, saying: "Shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom," until he even handed me an arrow that had no arrowhead and I shot with it. For every arrow I shot, the Messenger of Allah said: "O Allah, make his shot hit the mark, and answer his supplication," until when I had emptied my quiver, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shook out what was in his quiver and handed me a sharp arrow." He said: "It was one that had been feathered and was straighter than others." And Ḥibbān shot an arrow and struck the hem of Umm Ayman, who was giving water to the wounded, and it exposed her, and the enemy of Allah laughed immoderately. That distressed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he handed Saʿd [b. Abī Waqqāṣ an arrow] with no arrowhead and said: "Shoot with it." The arrow struck the hollow of Ḥibbān's throat, and he fell on his back, and his private parts were exposed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars showed, then said: "Saʿd has exacted retribution for her. May Allah answer your supplication and make your shot hit the mark."
